Random pedantic question - the credits of the film say "Pvt. Vasquez", but the script and a load of websites have her as Private First Class.

The credits say just Private, the script says PFC.

PFC is a subset of Private so both and either are canon, right? Is it correct/respectful to call a PFC simply "Private" in official writing?

And this is what happens when you have red wine, I also think she was just Private in the novel

Yeah you can refer to a PFC as a Private as a general term. Rarely if ever. We're rank happy in the US Marines. Full titles excepting PFC, Gunny, Master Guns (Variations thereof), Top (Master Sergeant, though originally meant for 1st Sgt's. I think the Army still uses it correctly), Smaj (Only when referring to the SgtMaj when he isn't around), and Gunner (Marine Warrant officers whether they actually are or are not Marine Gunners).

Officially they'd use PFC, and besides in the day the more senior guys were the auto riflemen.

Any shots of her locker?
That'll have the rank on it.

Just to throw more potential variants in - What about the computer registry booting up just before the hypersleep chambers open?
I'd *think* that says PFC, as that's what I always thought she was... But my DVDs are on loan right now.

I checked that. It has just surname, first initial, and service number.

Thinking about your initial question PFC is a higher rank than just Private. For anything "official" (documents, ids, etc) the correct rank of PFC would be used. For speaking, it would still be referred to as Private and not generally be considered an insult.

While it may not be common to refer to PFC's as "Private" in the modern military, it seems to be in the film. Gorman also calls Hudson "Private" before the "Chicken-shit outfit" line.
