The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Can anybody recommend a suitable material to use as a helmet band ? Of the ones i've seen they look to be a sort of 'natural' colour. I've got a couple of WWII era British '37 pattern cross-over straps that look similar in detail. Almost canvas in appearance

You mean the band around the outside?
It's just OD elastic, AFAIK. Costs a fiver from most surplus shops. Some come with those reflective Cats Eyes on the back, but can be unstitched in 30 seconds.

That actually sounds like you have a pretty good option. I myself use the OD band Ttaskmaster is talking about and I think its great, but you are correct that there is a 'canvas-ey' kind of look to the ones on screen. A bit lighter in color and thicker than the US OD ones.

Best pics I have are of Hudson's

And Crowe's

It could be worth noting that you dont NEED one. While certainly a fun detail, Apone & Weirzbowski didnt have one at all. So its not a requirement if you dont want to fuss with it.

The "cat eyes" came out after the Vietnam war. You don't need to unsttitch them, just turn them into the helmet and you're done. If needed, I can spare one to ship to you.

Looks a bit thick to me, remove 1/4 of the width and it'll be bang on I reckon :)

I would not split it, done that in the past! ;)

Messy!

Just go for a standard OD green one and invert it towards the helmet. ;)

its a Vietnam era US helmet band. its tan coloured, and slightly thicker than the modern 'cats eyes' version.
