The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Folks who got the Collector's Edition of Aliens: Colonial Marines received a USCM certificate stating that they have satisfactorily completed Colonial Marine Academy Training and graduated with honors. The name and date are left blank, but it is signed by Major General Gayle B. Hancock, Commanding Officer Colonial marine Officers Candidate School, Quantico, VA.

First off, in the Aliens Universe who would have received one of these? Do all Marines from privates on up get one, or is this something Gorman has framed in his locker? Am I reading it correctly that there is a Colonial Marine Academy and a separate Officers Candidate School? Someone with some military background care to shed some light on this?

Second, how should it be filled out? Hand written or typed? It seems like we tend to over use the USCM stencil, and this is a prime example of where the nerd in me wants to use it, but the realist is screaming 'no!".

So I really appreciate any input on this. I only have the one and I don't want to screw it up. :delta:

Sounds to me, like it's just a basic training grad certificate. Instead of printing on the original, I would scan it, 'shop it, and print it out at Kinkos.

It's a shame that Gearbox didn't use it at all in the game. :(

Have not read mine but if it says Officer Candidate School(OCS) then that would be for some1 that is now an Officer and not a grunt. i dont remember getting anythin after boot camp but i did when i finish my A-School.(Job Training.)and it would be filled out by being typed then Hand signed.

Ditto what people have said, but the one that comes with the CE is for Officers. I got a certificate after basic, but mine (Navy) is specifically for enlisted. OCS and the Academy are techincally two different things, but one can count for the other. By that I mean, if you graduate from the Academy, you are eligible for a commission and don't have to go to OCS. Contrary-wise, if you get a degree and are accepted to OCS, you can be commissioned at the end of OCS but don't go to a military academy. All my certificates from the Navy are typed in various fonts (but nothing stenciled or anything like that) except one and that is done in calligraphy.

I was going to get Michael Biehn to fill mine out if I go to the Calgary Comic Expo :) But I'd probably scan it first and try sending it to a few other actors to fill out, like Jenette, and Cynthia for sure :)

Not to be a wet blanket, but doesn't that fall under "paper prop recasting"?

As Kevin pointed out, this is hardly a stellar prop to begin with, but it is a unique item Gearbox made and I think we should respect that.

Now if someone wanted to run with this idea and make an even better one (that wasn't just for Junior Gormans) I'd be really excited to see that!

Yes, I suppose that is true. Gearbox has been cool including the fan base here...we should return the favor.

I couldn't agree more. Especially for those Marines who may have found themselves "financially challenged" and had to scrape together funds for the regular version as it was.

I'm sure we'd all benefit most joyously indeed, if this was made available to the community.

I support that.
Doesn't really convince people to put more, better stuff like this out if we're just going to rip it all off. Admittedly it's not quite the same level as publicly asking for the 3-D printing files to make your own Spat Armour, but it's still a bit of an insult.

As others have said, this sounds like them degree things that them comissioned folks get. If you're a grunt, chances are you won't have that.

However... This being the future, with fairly advanced technology, you'll likely need a degree in stuff just to find a job.
Hudson is a ComTech, for example, so may well have a college/polytechnic degree in Electronics or something. I'd expect Univerity types to mostly be officers, though.

So really it's down to your EU imagination, I guess.

Have you considered perhaps the Nametape font instead of the USCM armour stencilling?

GearBox wouldn't give two shits about it, as they don't profit from the Collector's Editions at all. 100% of the CE profit goes to the publisher, i.e. Sega.

Why not? I've graduated "with honors" from multiple academies during my military career, and I'm not an officer.

I have my Navy one on the wall here and photoshop. I did some similar work for the 501st with "Honorary Stormtrooper" Certificates and Garrison certificates. I can work out an enlisted one for the USCM, but it will take me a few days. I'll upload when I have some ready.

Only certificate I ever got was getting handed my eagle globe and anchor.

Other than that I got them for follow on schools, but nothing for boot.

But if it mentions an Academy and the commander of OCS (not say Training), its most likely meant for a officer. Anything enlisted would probably be signed by the commanding general of the Recruit Depot.

Charlie there are a few typos in there, but you might be aware of that by now.

Also I'd lose the capital letters at the start of words other than at the beginning of a sentence. Try it and see how much neater it looks.
