The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hello Hyde.

I made some Maruzen M870 grendes back some time ago to fit the airsoft guns. These are smaller than the Real 12 gauage size.

Here is a drawing off the dimension's you need for all types.

Oh crap those look good. I don't know about painting the ends, but if you made it smaller you could just use the red caps like Spat uses. I think the SA ones actually taper a little at the tip. Anyone want to verify that?

i had them made to the dimentions that steve kindly provided with the cap insitue, to save potentialy loosing them, i just checked the ones spat offers and it looks like the caps are the same diameter all the way up as well

as i cant wait to see what they look like with the red done im giving it a whirl with automotive paint, if it goes to crap i can always rub it down and start over

I'd add an etching primer to the surface if you are planning on using car paint straight onto aluminium.
Automative sprays are designed to spray onto primed steel, and you'll find that they won't adhere well straight onto aluminium alloys

You could also look into getting the heads red anodized- a bit pricier, but a tougher finish than plain paint.

Also- they look awesome: well done!

Look very nice there, Are you going to add the knurl on the angle near the base????

A fine to Medium straight knurl is what you need.

I had working plugers on mine so I need the cap to be removed, But this was at a price as the mininium order was 1000. Plus I have to machine off the logo in the front of the cap that was a pain in the ass to do.

Having no cap mean you can not lose it.

i didnt realise about the knurled part, im going to get a few more done later in the month i'll see if he can add the knurl to them.

cheers for pointing that out mate.

one question, am i assuming correct that the caps would be removed before being loaded into a PR?
if so ill get him to make one without the cap for my G&P

I've never thought about that. I guess it would make sense for them to pop the caps off before loading them.

I'm actually going to give an emphatic 'no' on this. My read:

-I think the only time you see them being loaded is when Ripley loads up near the end. She didnt 'pop any caps'.

-Considering they are soft enough to pop off with a finger, I always assumed they were soft enough to compress on impact when being fired from the launcher, negating the need to remove them prior. I think this was mentioned in the tech manual as well.

-They load identically to a shotgun after all. The previously loaded shells get physically pushed forward by the ones being loaded behind it. Removing the caps prior to loading would mean the plunger of the grenade being loaded would likely be PUSHED in by the grenade in front of it! The loading process would almost certainly compress all the plungers without caps and adios muchachos...

Just a quick question...how come Frost has some grenades with blue caps? What do they denote? White Phosphorus or something?

According to the Tech Manual;

M40 Grenades have Red Caps and are High Explosive Fragmentation Rounds.
M38 Grenades have Green Caps and are High Explosive Armour Piercing Rounds.
M51A Grenades have Blue Caps and are "Bounding Fragmentation Rounds".
M60 Grenades have White Caps and are White Phosphorus Incendiary Rounds.
M72A1 Grenades have an S embossed into the top and are Starshell Rounds.
M108 Grenades have a flat black tip and are Buckshot Cannister Rounds (essentially a Shotgun Cartridge)
M230 Grenades are Baton Rounds. *No Cap Colour or Distinctive Marking is listed.

However I think these colours etc we're probably just Expanded Universe extrapolations by the author and probably NOT based on background info from the script unless someone else knows different?

Ok people. The thing with caps are they are left on the grenade when loaded into the PR. While fire the force will hit the pluger hard.

I have loaded 7 Prop version (What it can hold in the tube at one time) of my grenades into my Maruzen M870 shotgun and I have no damage to the red cap.

I load two in the tube on my cut down Version on my G/L.

The Grenades load, fire and eject with the cap on with no problem.

I thought I point this out.

Is there any truth to the original grenades being made from snap caps?

Has the correct model ever been found?

In the "Superior Firepower" section of the Quadrilogy extras Simon Atherton does say that the grenades were made from snap caps.

Skip to 1:25 for the description of the M40 grenade.

I'm unaware if we ever identified the correct one.

Talk about dragging out an old thread but I’m exploring making functioning M870 rounds with the appearance of M40 grenades... I’m sure DATA (Steve) managed to do this... does anyone recall?
