The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hot damn! That's great Simon. So now we know it is a VIDCOM 30/17S, and more of the button details are clearer. But in that last photo are we seeing TWO camera lenses, or is there a shadow to the right of the single lens?? There's a glare off the glass of the left one, but there's a hint of a glare on the right one too (or else I'm just staring too hard at pixels).

Anyone else want to weigh in?

Beat me to it! +1 I agree its just the reflection.

For some decent profile pics, not sure you guys have rewatched the scene where she is indroduced to Gorman. After getting his coffee he puts his hat down near it and sits on the table the device is on. The screen and Camera must be fairly well recessed because the profile looks pretty clean overall.

EDIT: never mind. Not recessed, but kind of weird that it looks so flat. Almost like it has no camera or a much smaller camera than what appears in the actual video-chat scene.

I just took a photo from that scene last night but then I forgot to upload it before heading to work (yeah, I'm at work right now!). I was too busy trying to figure out who was on the cover of Ripley's People magazine (on the table next to the Vidcom) to notice the profile...

So, are we saying there is a pane of plexiglass in front of the screen and the single camera lens is "floating" on this?

Here's the flat profile like Bigbisont was mentioning. Could the lens be mounted on the inside of the plexi? Then it would appear flat from the side.

Its there its just thin, don't be getting confused with the helmet cam lens, plus the side of the screen tapers.
And yeah there's some perspex in-front of the screen.

But is it "floating"? By that I mean is it connected to the rest of the Vidphone by anything except the plexi/perspex?

Anyone care to guess on dimensions? It has just occurred to me that I'm not gonna fit my laptop in there

My portable DVD player might fit though

But a damned iPad would be ideal...

Find out what size the monitor they used for the motion tracker-screen close-ups was and I bet it's the same.
Then just work everything else out :)

Or Hunbrol enamel that's either not mixed properly or applied to a surface without any prep.

Silver coloured enamel paint gives that effect when put on too thick. :)

It certainly does Steve, nearly ruined a War Machine helmet doing that!

I'm considering using "hammered metal" paint to replicate the effect. First I'll do a test and see how it stacks up.

In other news, Bigbisont just mailed me the camera lens for this! Photos coming soon!

Are you sure you want to replicate what is a basic rushed painting error???

I don't think that's paint. To me that looks like a piece of Galvanized metal.

Grrr, I was outbid at the last minute on a set of those microphones I need for the build. Why can't every auction have a 'Buy It Now' option??

Here's a possibility for the outside shell of the Vidcom. I was so busy looking at the PC monitor shell I didn't even consider the computer's mainframe! I would cut the sides to match the overall shape, and the front panel would come up to where I've drawn the red line. The width at the very top is 7.25", from there it is adjustable based on how far I bend the metal.

I still don't have an idea of the correct dimensions so I'm winging it until I have the Realistic microphone and "logic card". From those I'm hoping I can eyeball the rest.

In the meantime how does this look to folks? I can always cut it down the top and widen it if I need to.
