The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Isn't "Uniquely rectangle" a bit of an oxy-moron?

Wiseguy!

Seriously though, it looks like they just slapped a camera lens on the front and stuck in the surplus plastic shell! It isn't even painted a different color!

hi guys, please look at these pictures. Don't you think it's the same stuff used for the base of the Vidcom interface?

Hot damn! It took me a minute to match up the orientation, but yes indeed, I think you're right!

Now, what the heck is it??

Going by the slots and vents, it looks like part of a TV or radio.

Look at these 3 pictures!! if you look carefully you can see that sort of control panel with the air vent without the electret stereo microphone and switch buttons attached to it (and maybe cutted) on the left of the unknown object. Could it possibly be an electric switchboard? I mean that sort of control panel with the transparent black plastic cover? Honestly I'm a bit confused now.... :(

Yes, I agree with you. Now the question is what kind of telly? Maybe a Philco/Hitachi? Phonola? Philips?. I notice that they used this stuff almost everywhere. Please have a look at these three pictures:

Now you can see clearly that it's the back shell of a crt tv, and there's also the rectangular control panel, they mantained the original shape in this case:

there are also vent holes placed on the sides as you can see here. They used different fake, almost flat plastic covers instead of the original back shell in my opinion. Possibly it's a 2 pieces assembly unit?:

First off, giangibus, THAT IS AWESOME! You've found the same part on the AP elevator and Vidcomm! Way cool!!

The Vidcomm and Colony CCTV monitors are actually the Panasonic Quintrix TC801. They are also on the Sulaco as Hypersleep monitors and I believe the same or similar are on the Operations consoles. I think the "G" may be irrelevant as it appears to be a region identifier. There may be subtly differences as to hardware for different countries. I circled a small discrepancy on the rear of the TV in red.

We are a very BIG step closer to identifying the Vidcom parts.

bughunt10” sent me a photo of an “ACT Apricot PC” he found where the bottom matched an item unidentified in the corridor which he intended to find for his corridor project.

Attachment:
ACT Apricot PC.jpg
ACT Apricot PC.jpg [ 33.12 KiB | Viewed 3844 times ]

After a lot of research it was confirmed that other parts of the “Apricot PC” he identified were used elsewhere, such as the Vidcom.

Apricot PC Bottom, Rear.jpg

We’ve identified 2 different models used in the film in various areas. They are the “Apricot PC” (credit bughunt10) and the “Apricot Xi” models.
We have discovered the bottom portion of the Vidcom body is made from the same bottom used in the corridor as well as the rear panel which was used as the front.
The cream coloured “Apricot PC” with two 3.5 inch floppy disk drives found by bughunt10 was used in the Sulaco Hypersleep bay and Atmosphere Processor, and the grey/black “Apricot Xi” with one 3.5 inch floppy disk drive can be seen on the desk in Medlab (along with the black keyboards attached). These two models share the same casing style aside from colour and the two drives versus one drive. The bottom tray portion of the housing and the rear panel are used extensively throughout every scene in the film.

Medlab Desk Apricots.jpg

I will be posting the other instances of its usage in the Set Identification thread, but this post will be about the Vidcom.

It’s hard to see the lines/angles of the sides of the case as in the Vidcom, but they may have cut the case on an angle to have it angled back. Still yet to be identified is the “hood” that sits over the Panasonic TC-801.

Attachment:
Vidcom Hood Details.jpg

bughunt10 has acquired an Apricot PC model for his corridor project but he has humoured me and placed the bottom tray and rear panel together to mock up the layout of the vidcom. Huge Thanks to “bughunt10”! Due to this, we have approximate measurements to identify the hood as well as the tone dialer used.

Any guesses as to what the green and white illuminated buttons might say? I bought a few that should fit and you can insert graphics into them.

I've replayed the vidcom call with Burke a few times today upscaled on my 4k player and it's still not clear.

What I can tell is that it looks like the white button has two rows of text, I want to say it says AUTO on there.

No luck on the green but my guess is says CALL or something similar, especially as Ripley has to press it to get through to Burke successfully.

I had assumed they put plexiglass in front of the TV screen for the prop, but here it is, already in place. I need to see if I can safely remove it though as the vacuformed piece needs to go over the screen *inside* the plexiglass.

Thanks to Harry Harris and Matt Noble I now have the TV mirroring my computer screen, and playing the audio through its speakers. This is a profoundly gratifying moment for me as this proves the Vidcom will work as intended.
In this photo I have the signal going through as PAL on top (color, squeezed aspect ratio), and NTSC on bottom (black and white, correct aspect ratio). Is there any reason to not use the NTSC version? The vacuformed frame will hide the black letterboxing bars in any case.
