Or put in the Archive section, but for that I suggest all the pics are redone as attachments to the forum, so that in the future they don't disappear. :)

Is that text on Hudson's medical patch thingies or a shadow from a raised section in the middle?

There's definitely text on some/all of them. No idea what they say though.

In regard to the Chinese / Japanese character on the back of Hicks' armor, it does in fact mean "love". In Japanese the kanji (character) is pronounced ai, like "I". Incidentally, it is written incorrectly. The kanji written on the back of the Terry English's Hicks armor as pictured below does not exist.

Image

It should look like this: (the four brush strokes in the very center of the character mean "heart", or kokoro in Japanese).

Image

With the red heart painted on the front of his armor, the addition of the kanji on the back could be a reference to love in a romantic sense, but with "LIFER" below it I always got the impression it meant love of the Corps. I wonder if anyone has something to support either of those assumptions?

Dietrich: Also had "Blue Angel" written on the back of her helmet cover.

Image

Hudson: His helmet cover had "BRAIN DEAD" written on the front, not "Dead Head". I think I have better pics somewhere, but you can just make out the word DEAD in these pics.

Image

Image

Drake: His right glove had this interesting design in white on the back. This screen grab shows it quite clearly.

Image

Here's a pretty clear shot of his "juju" bead necklace with the chicken bones:

Another shot of Drake's cap with the beads & bones on it:

And lastly: Gotta love this one of Hudson freaking out during the knife trick sequence! Note Drake's chicken bones hanging down beside his head.

Oops the teardrop has changed sides! A bit like Madonnas beauty spot used to, perhaps it was an 80's thing! ;-)

It's definitely under her left eye in the pics PVB posted earlier in this thread so I'm guessing some dumbass Graphic Designer @ the magazine flipped the image for "better visual balance" or just because he wanted the text down the left side of the cover and Jeanettes face was off centre to that side too!

While on the subject of the teardrop I'm fairly sure this has been mentioned before but the background information for Vasquez & Drake supplied to the actors was that they had joined the Marines rather than go to jail and I believe a Teardrop Tattoo is supposed to be a Prison/Gang thing to indicate you've killed someone.

I looked for the teardrop and immediately noticed that the image was flipped. I suppose these little changes get by for the most part because nobody but the truly obsessed (like us) ever look for things like that.

Some layout artists and even film editors do this blatantly. They probably get away with it because most people aren't looking for it. I wish they (especially film editors) would be a bit more judicious about when and when not to reverse images and scenes.

Going off topic for a moment, in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy I noticed that a number of sequences were reversed, even while watching for the first time. It was that obvious. When Aragorn's sword scabbard switched from his left hip to his right and then back again it was pretty hard not to notice how ridiculous that looked. I suppose they felt their reasons were justified, but suddenly reversed equipment is a dead giveaway and can backfire if not used with more care. It's nearly impossible to ignore those unfortunate flaws once you know they're there, dammit!

Yes and in that very Starlog issue is the Jenette Goldstein interview in which she describes Vasquez and Drake's backstories-

They were recruited from juvenile prison (serving life sentences) and were "permanent" Marines- no chance of discharge (otherwise they go back to prison). This is why their characters couldn't care less about protocol, had a much stonger bond with each other than the rest of the platoon and had zero fear of death.

Another meaning to the teardrop tattoo, is that a member of the gang died while the wearer of the tattoo was in prison and therefore couldn't attend the service.

That is great backstory for Drake and Vasquez, and a really interesting idea for were the USCM recruits folks. It would hardly seem like they'd be the only ones who were offered that option, right?

Makes you wonder about Hicks being a "lifer", doesn't it?

Watching Aliens on blu ray tonight (as you do) I noticed something else;

In the waking up from cryo scene, as the camera gets close to Ripley, it's obvious she doesn't have a 'Brazilian'.

I doubt I could get a good enough pic just using my digicam, so just go look for yourselves if you want.

I jus had a thought about this. On the replica there's the word "danger"
under the kanji. I wonder if it's supposed to mean he loves danger? :)

Another problem is very few of Terry's replica armor sets
Are exactly the same as the film ones. The camo patterns
are all over the place, even when compared with suits of
armor worn by the same actor in the film itself.

Need to dig out the blu ray for a closer look, but i'm wondering if Frost has something written on his shoulder lamp.

EDIT: Right, dug it out and im sure theres something on there, but its not legible to me. Could just be random wear.

I always assumed Hudson and Hicks had short sleeve BDU's with how high they rolled them up and how relatively thin it bunched up. Does anyone one know for sure if Hicks had any like this?

Define "know for sure". I have never seen a pic of Hick's BDUs showing the short sleeve, but I do feel pretty positive in saying long sleeves do not roll into armpits while keeping a flat profile! I would think they had to have been at least as short as Hudson's.

But in other concrete news, Sgt Burton posted this pick in another thread and it hadnt been mentioned here yet, so figured I would roll it on over.

Ski's "Dice" below the last letters of his name.
