I was emailing back and forth with Cynthia "Dietrich" Scott a bit ago, and I asked her about her fingerless gloves in the film. Turns out I was wrong about the gloves, but I'm glad as it brought up this cool story:

"I forgot to mention that. It wasn't a glove, it was a "bandage" made out of a white cotton headband wrap like the samurai wore. Before I got the part in 'Aliens' I took one of those self-help empowerment workshops (specially tailored for actors) called Samurai. We focused a lot on our goals, courage, helping each other, and going for what we want. At the end of the course I made these headbands for my friends and myself that had a rising sun and some Japanese characters on them (can't remember what they said) -- to remind us to be strong and fearless in our endeavors. Then I heard Sigourney had done the same course! We had a little conversation about it on set, and I incorporated the headband into my costume as a bandage. One day I accidentally switched hands between takes and forgot about it -- the script supervisor never caught it and I panicked, thinking we'd have to reshoot. This was before I realized how insignificant I was in the scheme of things!

So, a piece of trivia you have that no one else has.

CS"

And here's a photo of the bandage in question:

Plus, how often does a newbie like me get a fresh piece of trivia to share?

Cynthia is really, really nice.

I knew she had a bandage or something around her wrist/hand, but never really noticed how far up her fingers it went until now! Great inside info on that!

As for Cynthia being nice... I met her (as did many of us) at D-Con in 2006 (which we can all still thank Sgt Tony for- for doing the leg work with her agent to get her signed as a Con guest).

To this day she is hands down, easily the nicest, most sincere actor I have ever had the pleasure of meeting!

She even went as far as seeking out our group (at our fan table) to say goodbye to us all before finally leaving the convention on Sunday! A real class act!

After she left, her agent talked to us briefly on what a positive effect "our group" had on her. 2006 was a tremendously hard year for her as she lost her home to Katrina, and was not doing well emotionally. Her agent said that we really lifted her spirits- getting to meet dedicated fans of the film.

Nice! I was aware of the kanji but had no idea what the story behind it was.

You can see the kanji quite clearly in this picture.

It's pronounced 'shin' and means 'truth', 'faith' or 'believe'.

So I just saved that picture, blew up the section with her hand, printed it off and ran out to show it to my co-worker from Hong Kong. He translated it for me, I hustled back to my computer, scrolled down to write this response... and then saw that Mole had already translated it!!

EPIC FAIL.

(Great photo though Mole! I've never seen that one before).

LOL! Ain't that always the way. ;)

This pic doesn't show the kanji too clearly but you can see how far the wrap goes up her wrist and the white tape that she's used to bind it with.

This screencap shows the rising sun quite nicely.

And another where you can see the tape and the sun. (EDIT - Which I've just noticed is almost exactly the same as the one you've posted.)

Is that a bonsai tree in the left foreground of that last picture?

Yeah, certainly looks like one.

Funny how you watch a film a hundred times and people can still point out new details. LOL!

there's a very clear image of the badge on the front of her helmet in one of those pics, it looks like a us army nurse collar insignia

Good catch Gunny63! I've just been using a standard Caduseus, but there is an "N" visible in that photo for sure. Time to revise my uniform.

I noticed the bonsai as well. Pretty cool! What do you think the thing is on the table to the right of Dietrich with the two knobs on top? It sort of looks like a slide projector. And what is the black snake thingy? I kind of remember stuff like that in the 80's but i don't know what it was for. Stress relief or comic relief?

I've always wondered what the badge on her helmet was. Nice find, Gunny!

No idea what the 'snake' thing is but I think the other thing is an electric fan heater - http://di1.shopping.com/images/pi/a0/4e ... 69-0-0.jpg

That snake thing is bizarre!
Sort of looks like some rubber tubing ripped out of a car, varnished and put in a washing basket.

The heater is the same one that makes the groovy red light in the "mummy said there's no monsters..." scene right?

Post subject:

Good call on the heater! I bet that's exactly what it is.

IIRC, the snake thing was sold right along with Newton's Cradles, 3D pin art, and those metal mobiles like they had on the Sulaco. "Executive Time Wasters".

I used to have one of those toys. I don't remember what it was called but you can find them now if you search for 'tangle'.

This one is chrome but the one in the film (and mine!) was black.

Id love it if every character got a thread like this. Full of random bits of info that are for the true diehards. But I suppose not everyone actually has such interesting side stories.

...or do they?

Well until I got (heavily) into researching this stuff I never even noticed Dietrich or Frost's graffiti or Ferro's lucky rabbit's foot. I'd love to see all the various personalizations documented.
