The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

So I woke up with a sore throat this morning. But was still well enough to work on the suit.

Some pic updates:

Yeah! The suit is almost done. I'm going to leave the back for now. Need to fill, sand and paint everything. Here is a test fitting with all the parts.

I was at target a few weeks ago and they had this toy bionicles helmet that had a voice synthesizer and glowing eyes on sale for 10 bucks. I bought one for the hell of it and am toying with the idea of using the electronics in the helmet.

No freakin' way! I just saw one of those helmets at the local Goodwill last week for $5.99 and it still worked! Unfortunately, even though I could have talked myself into finding a use for it somewhere down the road (it was pretty cool), I passed because I thought it was too pricey for Goodwill.

Hmmm... well at least now I know what the helmet was from. I looked all over that thing and couldn't find anything on it that could tell me what toy series it belonged to. But at least I do now. ;)

(*Sets alarm clock for 8:00am to run back to the Goodwill in the morning.)

Nice job on the rest of the gear... you are really fleshing that thing out fast! Very nice indeed! :D

Well... been sick this week... so while I was home I painted my armour. Before and after shots.

Still waiting on the helmet to be delivered. Otherwise I would have probably gotten the mask done by now....:(

Did you paint your hands black too? Oh wait... those are gloves. ;)

What finish of black paint did you use? Satin, semi-gloss, flat? What brand?

Have you considered giving your armour some very light silver weathering on a few of the edges and high points? Nothing extreme mind you... just subtle touches. I think it may add more dimension to it and give it more of a 'been around' look and not a 'just painted' look.

Looking good Dave! :D

I think a scotchbrite pad would look more realistic. If he used flat black paint........the scotch brite will give it a "used" look.....without using the chipped metal look. It will bring out the details just like drybrushing would...only keeping that futuristic composite material look intact.

I like the synthetic look of the armor. I had always assumed this stuff was not steel, but some sort of ultra hard bulletproof poly-kevlar-plastic type stuff. The technical jargon aside, I don't know jack about plastics or kevlar. :) hahahaha. Either way, the armor kicks ass. Nice job.

I used the Krylon Fusion Flat black. This stuff really bonds well and takes scratches very well. I'm going to give it another coat and as Steve said go over it with some rough material to scuff it up.

The funny thing is this isn't suppose to be synthetic. It's modeled after the anime film which is placed in an alternate post war early 60s. I think it's like wearing platemail. But I've always wondered about the shoulders since they look so big and thick, how can they stick out like that...

But then kevlar and plastic could have been invented by then.

Well, I've been working on the mask. I've basically been winging it with a heatgun. It's basically (used very loosely) like the screen version. Should do for now. Hopefully it will look better with a bit more detail, paint and glowing eyes...

Dave, that is excellent work! And it looks even better with a coat of paint on it!

So, have anything in the works for the weapons?

actually Noeland, based on the aera of the Movie steel is the only choice they had, it takes place after WW2 (ie ends in a stalemate with italy already defeated and German and Japan being only axis power left to help rebuild each other)

Actually there wasn't any paint on it DB. :) I was using black and white styrene and abs scrap. Now, here is the mask with some paint on it and added details around the eyes. Wish I could make it look more acurate, but I'm not gonna push my luck. Last bit is to wire up the eyes and install the lenses.

As for a weapons, I hear Mat has a great replica MG-42. On the web I found a guy who makes vacuformed ones that look pretty good. Since I live in California, I'm gonna see if I can make one myself. It only has to look pretty good. If it's too realistic, I may not be able to carry it. Would like to make a mg-42, but they are hard to replicate from scratch. A mg-34 is easier to make using pvc pipes.

Got around to attaching the hose... but that's about it. The nice thing is that the mask will detach from the helmet. I was going to rivet them together. But thought better of it when I have to pack it for traveling.

Outstanding!

I still wish you hadn't painted it, though. :)
See how much you had to crank the gain to get the details to show? Wasn't a problem before. ;)

Hope to see it in person sometime. Must be quite a sight!

Hey Treadwell! The photos were crap cause I was standing in front of a window and it was still pretty bright the pictures came out underexposed. I'll try and get my girlfriend to take some pics outside.

So, I finally went to RadioShack today and bought what I needed to light up the eyes. I didn't go with the super bright LEDs cause they keep messing with the digital camera's focus. I have an extra set of small holes above the LEDs so I can sorta see where I'm going.

Thanks guys!

Brian, I'll be sure to get a restraining order on you. ;)

Rick, the vision is almost useless. I have two holes smaller then 1/4 inch drilled above the LED. The reason I kept them small was so that a close up camera shot wouldn't show my eyes.

Without the lenses it was fine. With the lenses it was sorta fuzzy, cause they are not 100 % clear. Not to mention I sharpee'ed them red. So vision is poor. Worse when the LEDs are on. But at least I won't walk into a wall or pole.. I may make the holes biggers.

Here is a pic of the back side. I should have done it before I painted it, but was in a hurry. You can make out most of the stuff. The battery pack just touches my forehead. Off to the right side is a sliding on/off switch that I can reach under my chin. I can turn it on and off without removing the mask.

Oooo, scary! Love the eyes! :D

Awesome job you've done there Dave -- simply awesome! And fast too!

That will be incredible to wear to Dragon*Con for sure.

So, how well exactly can you see with the helmet on? Is visibility much worse when you light up the LEDs?

For some reason I would expect your peripheral vision to be a bit more challenging than a typical stormtrooper helmet.

Yeah, you don't want to go wandering around conventions blind man. Lots of ways to make sure you can see, and the eyes are hidden.

Mirrored lenses behind the colored lenses is a trick a friend of mine used on his storm trooper helmet. He made his helmet with dark green lenses.
