Post subject:  Salvation Army Service-C's
A quick trip to my local Salvation Army and Goodwill gave me all the bits I needed to make the following set of Service-C's:

The shirt was longsleeved, and I intend to use the spare material to make the pocket flaps SA. The pockets themselves aren't going to be as they have that pleat in the front, but it's only noticeable on one side thanks to the ship patch. I may use a little spare material to clean up the inside of the collar too as the simple conversion is more obvious on this shirt than on my BDUs.
I took some photos of the process that got me this far, so I'll post them on here soon.

The badge is from Dom of course, and the idea of wearing it this way came form Aaron Horrocks. This was my dad's lid from when he was in the service. My Marine is only a private so this seemed more appropriate.

Needs rank chevron on the left sleeve. Search eBay: "Marine Rank Chevron: WWII era PFC, pair - wool on khaki" for the correct one.

This is the standard set by SSgt Burton for Svc C. Officers wear subdued rank pins in their shoulders.

Thanks Dom! The only auction that came up was a bit more than I'm looking to spend (i.e. it costs more than the rest of the uniform combined), but I will use it as a guide when I hit up the surplus stores.

By coincedence, the shirt for my Service C was a thrift store find as well (it has the pleats in the pockets too)!

Just to note, the officer bars (as seen in Aliens) are not really subdued. They're black, sure, but they're not dull. They're really shiny, same as the one on Gorman's hat.

I went digging through my dad's old military stuff (looking for rank chevrons), and look what I found!

It will need some serious TLC, but I think I can make a nice Dropship helmet out of it. If only there was a detailed thread on how to recreate the dropship helmet 8) (/sarcasm)

The scene where Gorman is in the apartment. Look closely and you can see glare on the shoulder bars.

On the hat, watch the briefing scene and any other time you can catch a glimpse of the insignia on his hat. If they were actually subdued, they'd be matte black, but they're clearly reflective.

Go with the stays it will amke you look alot sharper. but they do become a pain to wear so glad the navy went to cammies now so we dont have to always wear them.

Yeah, they can be uncomfortable if you're not used to them, but they really are necessary to have that sharp look. Otherwise your shirt will look all crappy and unprofessional.

<------7+ years and never stood duty in Chucks (or Bravos). WINNING!


Love the look. Up to you to wear the stays. I probably have a dozen pairs laying around here somewhere of varrying types (ones that connect to your socks as well as the shirt, or connect to your shirt but have loops for your feet, its all preference)

Using the leftover material from the sleeve conversion I made screen accurate front pockets:

Then the more I looked at this picture Mole found the more I realized the Mandarin collar just looks like the shirt stay:

So I removed my poorly modified collar by seam ripping the edging thread:

The shirt stay just needs to be resewn and it's done.

looks good to me. i think we need to make a set layout for the C's as a uniform Reg on here. i see so many with rank on sleeves but then we have some with on the shoulder. Im down for which ever im also working on my own shirt need to go buy another to do the pockets, i made my pattern for them just need matching fabric. the spare shirt i bought was the wrong tint of tan and heavier fabric.

Wow...that's really awesome. Kevin or Retro...do you guys have pics of the shirt prior to mods? That way I can keep my eye open for what to look for...same with the pants.

Sorry I didn't take a picture of the 'before'! It started out a lot like a longsleeved Dickies workshirt. Ideally there wouldn't be pleats in the pockets and it would be a less stiff material (mine is ripstop). Buying two shirts works as well, but for how little material you'll need I'd opt for modifying the sleeves and using that.

Matt, generally we are using USMC Service C shirts and modifying them accordingly. As for trousers, the ones pictured here are the incorrect colour. Good old Commonwealth Rifle Green dress trousers are more accurate. I'm sure you can scare yourself up a pair.
