Ok guys and gals. I've decided I want to make my pilot costume to look a bit more like the one from the new A:CM game.

For those of you who don't know what she looks like:

I'm not going to bother with the 'armoured' parts right now, but I fallen in love with her jacket. Not only does it look awesome, I'm sure it'll be more comfortable to wear than the old M69. ;)

Anyone have any idea what it is? Is it a real item (or at least based on one), or is it just something that the artist came up with?

Nooooo! I don't make the soft parts of my costumes. I'm terrified of sewing machines.

Yup, I'm sure I've seen something like it before but I'm coming up blank at the moment.

Looks like a sheepskin or leather biker's jacket, similar to this:

This thread has now changed into a kind of build thread as I add some bits to my existing pilot costume. I'm not going to be able to get it looking like the game pilot so I'm giving it my own spin and using her as inspiration.

Firstly, I bought a cheap 'Chinese Pilot' helmet from Ebay. It's actually a pretty nice helmet considering the price. I've already taken off the visor cover and started painting it.

I'm going a nice obnoxious showing of UKCM pride. Here's a crappy mock-up of what the paint job will look like.

I'm also thinking about cutting out the 'ears' and adding some parts to give it a 'proper' DS pilot look. And yes, that chin strap has to go!

I've also picked up a 'flight jacket'. Another Ebay bargain that has the right look. The patches are just laid on there to give me an idea of possible positioning.

I need to find something to replace those horrible gold wings that came on it. Maybe a leather name tag or something.

I'd use one of the leather patches with the gold lettering that actual pilots use these days. Something like "Last name, first initial blood type, next line rank, service number" or something like that. I'm sure you can order custom ones. They're usually velcro.

I think this is a great start. I love the helmet design.

Being that it's a UKCM impression, shouldn't the rank stripes be inverted? Also, you might be able to find a seamsters/stress to take up the hem of the jacket, give it the short look from the concept art.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I've looked at the leather patches. I can only find US suppliers and I need it for the end of the month. Maybe it's something I'll add later.

Rank is the same way they wear it in the movie. I think it looks wrong with other way up anyway.

I had thought about taking up the jacket but it would interfere with the pockets and I have to have pockets! Where would I keep my corn bread otherwise? ;)

Does you flight suit not have pockets? anyways im still going to keep looking for a jacket that matches the one in the game

is it me or is it a cropped jacket?

edit: no, it's definitely cropped.

This from amazon comes close: http://www.amazon.com/Katie-Satin-Jacke ... rop+jacket

edit2: actually I feel like this jacket from forever21 comes closer, except for it not being OD

That makes sense. That particular patch is designed to be worn point up, so it stands to reason that it might not look right inverted.

And, where would one be without their cornbread? In dire straights, that's where!

Yes it does, but having things in those pockets breaks the lines of my outfit. :P

Check out some of the larger motorcycle shows nearby.
Go along and have fun anyway, but many will have small independant traders in the stalls who offer custom embroidery, leather etching and all sorts of cool stuff.
The machines can usualy etch any b&w image or text onto a 2-3mm patch of your choosing, from small nametapes to larger rockers and even full backpatches. The nametape ones are quite popular.

Prices tend to be good as well.
I'll keep an eye out at any I go to and grab contact details if I see any leather guys there.

Really is a cool pilot concept. A costume based off this would look pretty badass. Love to see this!

First- I love this idea!

Second- Great helmet! I've had my eye on those helmets on ebay for a long while, but never picked one up. Looks like a nice alternative to an SPH-4.

It also looks like the pilot is wearing the lower half of a G-suit on her legs and abdomen. I know those aren't cheap as I looked them up when I was doing my EU pilot a few years back, but are you considering getting a set Vicky?

I was actually really impressed with the helmet. Yes, it's a little large for me but all helmets are. Some of the padding is just velcro'd in and the rest is just lightly glued so for those with bigger heads it shouldn't be an issue to remove some to get a better fit.

I can't decide if it's a G-Suit or not. It does look very similar but I'm seeing armour rather than material on her thighs and calves. And the straps look more like a safety harness or the kind you get with a parachute. I could really do with some nice hi-res images. As for getting a set, I hadn't even thought about it. Comfort wise, I'd probably be better off without. ;)

Straps do indeed look like they're holding on various bits of kit.

I'd agree that the trouser bits are likely some kind of g-force apparatus, as shown in SA and Russian versions here:

Maybe she's some kind of fast jet pilot rather than just a bus driver. ;)

Her helmet doesn't look quite as bulky as the DS pilots and the G-Suit would make more sense then.

The extra buckles and straps also make me think they took some inspiration from the Tech Manual.

Or perhaps no-one cares about the grunts in the back, while a DS pilot needs to remain conscious when dropping into a high-gravity zone...

Hey Vicky

If you can find one small enough, what about one of the RAF mk3 Cold Weather Jackets (as used in Alien)?
They come short (cropped jacket like) for the size.
Goes with the UKCM look and IMO look good over a flight suit (better than with the actual matching trousers).

But that's half of the fun of combat drops. First one to pass out is a big girl's blouse!

Oh, I hadn't thought of that. Not a bad idea. Problem is, I wear a Size 1 flightsuit. If the jackets are sized the same then it'll be interesting trying to find one. And also, the words 'cold weather' and 'convention hall' don't really go together. ;)

Post subject:

They aren't all thick and padded Vicky, actually not really sure why they are called cold weather.

One of them is a size 1 on ebay now (bit expensive that one though) and states

Size 1 To fit Height 152-161 cm / Chest 81-92 cm
Approx: 5'-5'3" Height / 32"-36" Chest

and (sort of answering my own question)

RAF Jacket - RAF Aircrew MK3 Cold Weather Jacket manufactured from a 'cotton feel' outer fabric in grey / green colour.

Full fabric inner lining.

Thermal efficient 'honeycomb' internal fabric for triple layer protection against cold.

So they are available in that size.

love the idea. and it looks like boht a G suit and thigh plates. and the leather stamped patch i see them at teh exchange on base all the time. Navy used to wear them on our Foul Weather jackets and the price is not to bad if i can remember. I used the same helm for a Film im working on. mine was Blue tho and they are cheap and not bad in strength we thru ours around last time we filmed. just a heads up if u paint it tape off the rubber seal on the rim it will not take paint and gets tackie and wont dry. cant wait to see more tho.
