The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I per ordered ACM and got the power loader statue and some patches. Are those patches good to use on my uniform?

The patches are not screen accurate, for example they are undersized, the Screaming Eagle does not have a blue border like the one with A:CM and the delta is not red, white and blue but rather red, white and BLACK, however it is a common mistake :)

Even our emoticon :delta: is blue because I don't think it was mutually agreed that the blue was in fact black until fairly recent.

That said, it is your uniform so you can use whatever you like.

You could always try what the fantastic patch alteration expert "retrogarde" has done with his A:CM delta by using a black sharpie over the blue :)

Thanks for letting me know. I do want to be screen accurate. But funds are really tight right now. So far all I have is a real helmet from nam.

If you want to continue on the screen accurate patch route, the movie patches were silk screened, not embroidered.

If you're wearing armour then the only patches showing are the Eagle and the U.S. flag. The Eagle can be found as an embroidered patch online for about $7, but make sure you get one with "dot" stars, not five pointed ones. The flag should be commonly available at surplus shops, gun shops etc, just try to find one without the yellow border.

I think a few folks were going to attempt a run of printed patches at some point.

What I did as a cheap alternative was to make my own using paper-backed cotton sheets. You run them through an inkjet printer and then peel off the paper backing.

I drew all the patches, printed them onto the cotton, and then applied some heavy fusible interfacing to the back before zig-zag stitching the edges (overlocking/serging would be better).

They do fade a little with the first wash though.

Here they are unwashed.

Awesome! That really looks a heck of a lot like what they used in the film. It's the surging that's a bitch to get right...

Yeah, those were rough. The foot control was on it's way out so speed control was fiddly.

My overcast foot and new foot control now make it much easier to get a better finish.

Those are some nice patches. I suck with sewing machines. How much would a set of good patches cost me?

A good embroidered patch set costs anywhere from 12 -20 USD.

Ha! You can't see the back where the bobbin thread kept getting tangled! :D

The overcast foot helps a whole lot!
It's well worth buying for those of us who can't justify the cost of a serger.

I picked mine up on ebay for a couple of £ at most.
