The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hi all,

I've been very slowly working on putting together my own M56, based on a Shoei. Anyway, as of about a week ago, I [re]noticed a part that you don't see on most M56s - a weird little cylinder that sits on the underside of the barrel shroud (about where the steadicam arm attaches) ...

Can be seen here -

Apologies to Spat for direct linking without asking 1st

And here -

Image borrowed from the AVP Wiki - http://avp.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Anyone know a) what it is / what it's practical use was? [if any] and b) what parts were used to make it? [am assuming it's been identified]

Cheers
Aron.

I believe it was a counterweight to balance the SG on the Steadicam arm.

I've seen that before . My smart gun doesn't have that piece . If you find out what it is I'd be interested in adding it to mine .

Aaah, a counterweight, that makes sense. Cheers Harry!

It's connected to the plate that is used to connect the arm to the MG42.

As with other SteadyCams it acts as counterweight.

Depending on your SteadyCam arm you may not need to consider that much what the correct weight would be as this can be compensated when you adjust the springs of the arm.

Good luck with your build!

BTW: Matt can show you a picture of his connector replica.

Yeah, those hook things from Home Depot are awesome! And now I think they finally come in other colors.

As 577-ops mentioned it actually on the bottom of the 'C' section plate that fit around the gun, joining it to the arm. So technically it not part of the gun, it part of the vest / arm
