I dont mean to foggy up what was clear, but something just occured to me about that use of that insert.
Take a look at the shot of the inside Dietrich's armor on the Harry Harris page-
http://www.harryharris.com/dcopen.htm The buckle/flap half insert is there, but the other side appears to simply join both halves direct.
Being that the armor was tailored to each actor, I think its perfectly logical that bigger marines had gaps between the two halves necessitating an insert, and perhaps smaller ones (like Dietrich) were just strait joined. Which leads me to conclude a direct joining of halves is still 100% accurate. Use of that insert is simply at the discretion of the builder/marine to achieve the best fit.
(EDIT: Or it could be that on that particular "stunt" set they just wanted as few moving/shifting parts as possible and left it out. Who knows...)
