hello fellow marines (and bugs), here is a project i set myself do to in just one day. after ordering a set of M40 grenades i found they had also sent me an empty one as well! so i decided to make this one a "working" prop. enjoy!......

here is the grenade as it came
Image

after some thought about how i would make the workings of the push button, i came up with using pen parts!
Image

and the cap? a glue stick cap seemed a good choice..
Image

i glued the button to a metal rod and slipped the spring over it
Image

and the housing for the spring was also made from pen parts..
Image

all the working parts and how they will go together...
Image

and here is a line-up of all the seperate parts before assembly...
Image

the spring housing glued in place and i also added the cuff from the glue stick to give the cap something to lock onto..
Image

i sculpted epoxy putty between the cuff and housing to give it the right shape and support...
Image

and all painted...

not bad for 1 day of work i think :)

thanks Dom! yeah the casting wasnt too great (some of my M40's are leaning to one side) but will certainly make do until i can afford some metal ones. i just wanna get my complete outfit first then upgrade certain parts as time goes by.

Good work dude!!

Just the kind of "piece together" project I love! :)

There's something very satisfying about pulling something together out of basically nothing isn't there!?

Bodgeineering! It's the best!!

I've always had great respect for scratch built weapons and kit. The Sarge's armor comes to mind for kit and I've seen some excellent scratch built Pulse Rifles. Unfortunately, I'm not a scratch built kinda Marine but a "spend bucks on cool kit" Marine. My hat...uhm I mean my helmet is off to you nickatron, for a job well done.

thanks for all the kind words guys. I am a great fan of scratchbuilding and find it alot of fun but considering that putting a USCM outfit together relies heavily on screen accuaracy, scratchbuilding is kind of a last resort (if funds are low etc). once i have my "basic" complete get-up then i will upgrade individual parts.

sadly dom i will not be at Dcon as i live far away in the UK. i have seen your grenades though and as soon as my resin ones need upgrading ill be in touch. :)

A little steel wool can give it more of a "turned aluminum" look.
