So I'm trying to answer a question posed over on the RPF. Appraently somebody raised the notion that Frost's character might have been gay. (Not that there would be anything wrong with that if he was. So this stems from the graffitti "Heath" on his armour (and a little over-analyzing of the Aucturian joke in the mess hall). I know that Ricco Ross' girlfriend's name was Heather, so that is what it was supposed to be, but why did it get shortened to "Heath"? Anyone know the deal? Kevin |

Hey Kevin, Yes it refers to Heather, who was indeed Ricco's partner at the time. Similarly Bill paxton put 'Louise' oh his armour; she was his fiancée I believe. Harry |

Thanks Harry. Any idea why it was shortened to "Heath"? Perhaps it was his pet name for Heather? Calling her Heath instead? Kevin |

Heath (pronounced exactly how you'd say the word Heather, just stop before the 'er' bit if you see what I mean) is a common-ish shortening of the name here in the UK, verbally at least. I don't know if Heather was British but maybe someone British called her Heath and it stuck. I think the misunderstanding on the RPF about it being a man's name is that they hear it in their minds as Heath as in Heath Ledger. Harry |

I think the problem here Kev, is that you have been surfing the RPF in the first place. M |

I can back-up Harry here - Heath (pro heaa-th) is pretty common shortening for heather in the UK. And considering most of the marines had their own first names and stuff, would make sense for them to embellish armour with real life sweethearts etc. |

Thanks guys! So "Heath" would be pronounced as if it rhymed with "Beth"- that makes a lot of sense now! So it may very well have been Ross' pet name for his girlfriend, or somewhere along the line someone used the short name for Heather and it stuck as you said Harry. At any rate, it isn't a dude's name on there. Kevin |

Yes sorry Harry, I did read that, but it didn't click with me. The "th" threw me off at first as I kept sounding it as... a "th" sound. Kevin |

SSgt Burton wrote: The "th" threw me off at first as I kept sounding it as... a "th" sound. That's because it is. Just say the word Heather but stop before you say the 'er' part. Simple. Someone with a 'cockney' London accent might shorten it to sound like 'Hev' but that's just a contraction of the 'th' to a 'v' sound. Same as Bev if we were talking about the name Beverly. Harry |
