Post subject:  Finished: hand welder

I've had this kit from FNG lying around for too long, maybe a year and a half before Chris passed away. My biggest issues were with the parting line going down the back of the handle and the protective screen attachment point.

The parting line wasn't bad itself, it was difficult because the back of the handle has grooves running up and down it. Had to fill in/sand off inbetween the grooves, tedious, very tedious. And it wasn't bad to begin with, I could have probably left it alone, it was just me being nit picky.

The protective screen attachment point was a problem only because I tried reenforcing what was there (two resin tabs) with bits of metal. I got the whole thing together and the tabs broke off anyway. So then I had to find pictures of the modification that Chris suggested which were kindly supplied by a few board members.
I completed the mods, and they look a little janky but I was at the point where I wanted this done.

I knocked out the solid black resion lens and replaced it witha thin piece of plastic sprayed with Testors black window tint spraypaint. This actually didn't work to well, the end result looked "splotchy". I actually made three lenses all of which had the same problem. I ended up stacking them one on top of another and THAT ended up looking fairly good, so I glued the whole stack in place.

Painted it overall with Testors Light Earth which I have used on everything that required Bess Brown. Hand painted the black areas, black wash, scratched it up here and there and added some silver rub N' Buff for metal fatigue and that was that.

Chris my friend, I finally got it done.

Thank you! :)

And I like to call this particular finish "fried chicken" because of all the weathering.

Used but not abused, perfect amount of 'frying' ;)

Chris would be proud :)

Really nicely done! the weathering is spot on :)
Its the first time I've seen one of these up close, looks like a modified plasma cutter torch ??
You know you could put a real welding glass on that, their only like £2 tops, HTH :)

Thanks for the comments.

Leigh, the business part of the welder was taken from an actual welding rig, the handle was a camera part of some kind originally.
I could have put a piece of welding glass on it, yes, but mine cost $0! ;)
