The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Sorry to say it, David, but unless I'm mistaken, that guy is a well known recaster...
Don't feel too bad that you got sucked in, but I'd strongly advise you to avoid purchasing anything from him again should that be the case.

I'll confirm ASAP - If the source of the welder is as I suspect ( Recast Marco ), you'll know as soon as I've had a chance to check my ref pics on my external HDD.

Well, Spat is the only person currently producing them.
The late Chris Chulamanis had some really nice ones before he passed away as well, and there was an Italian dude ( I think ) doing metal ones that actually worked.
Would LOVE one of those!

Spat's your best bet if you want one just now though.

Clean and straight or not, it's a recast, dude!

And there are a number of highly skilled artisans on here who have had their work stolen in the past - it's a practice that we completely abhor, as a community.
I suspect that even that comment you just made will have been enough to put you on a "Do not sell to this person" list or two, as it seems like you're dismissing the inherent wrongness of recasting. :(

Maybe David didn't mean it like that?

He's been sucked in so maybe he's just trying to make the best of it now.

Personally I find it really bad that these people can get away with this, thanks for the information too,it's fantastic because without it,it's people like myself that could get easily sucked in.

Helen.

Thank you Helen.
It seems every other time I open my mouth on this board, i make someone angry.

All I was saying is that it is too late to cancel the transaction, so I am stuck with it -

and being as I am stuck with it, at least it is not shot full of bubbles, pinholes, and voids.

I was certainly not trying to imply that recasting is acceptable in any way.

You must try to understand that for many of us, kits like these are very hard to find. I have been trying to find a hand welder for years !

and the only venue I have been aware of is eBay, and the prices have always kept me from getting one.

So I jumped at this one without ever suspecting I should research the seller first. I assumed it was an individual.

Clearly I was mistaken. But please don't crucify me for being ignorant ! :(

He's not having a go at you for buying it, rather that you don't seem to bothered about it.
That's the vibe I'm getting from him any-ways :)

Hypothetically speaking, lets say that I did send an email to the seller, before placing a bid, asking him if he makes his own moulds,
or if he is recasting others work. Do you really think he would have confessed that he is recasting?
I bet even now, if I were to question him, he would insist he is not recasting.
Out of curiosity I looked at the one Spat sells. it is different from the one I purchased, so the guy is not ripping off spat.
Finally, the poster says he will confirm ASAP. But I see no definitive confirmation from anyone that my seller is or is not recasting.
So we are assuming he is recasting. But here in USA we are presumed innnocent, until proven guilty. Is that not the case in UK ?
What if this part is pulled from his own moulds, pulled from his own plug? ( it is possible, as the welder is not that complex. )
Just saying, there is a lot of assuming going on here, and so far no facts have been shown to prove one way or the other.
I now wish I had never seen the damn auction at all.

Hey dude - don't worry, Reaper had it right.
It was the way you seemed unconcerned about it being a recast that ruffled a few feathers.

And my apologies - I forgot to go and edit my post to confirm that the welder IS a recast Marco.
The main tell is the large circular piece on the side. A quick Google for images confirms the item's lineage, and a quick trawl for the shop's name brings up threads on the Replica Prop Forums about many other kits that the guy has ripped off.

You're correct in that it's "Innocent until proven guilty"... But certainly in the modelling and propmaking community, recasting is such a big no-no that the best thing you could have done would have been to have replied along the lines of "Damn, it might be a recast? What do I do to try to find out, one way or another? And what steps can I take to ensure I don't get suckered again?"

Some would go so far as to recommend you destroy it - To me, that's stupid. You bought it already, might as well make the most of it!

But to come across as completely unconcerned as to an item's source, so long as you GET one... That's what'll irk people.

David I'm ignorant too.

If i see something I get excited and buy it,I don't think of things like people ripping people off,I always assume they are honest like myself, naive I know but you live and learn.

I'm always on the look out for things for Paul and could easily have found myself in your situation.
Thank goodness for this post,I've found it really helpful.

Don't feel bad about seeing the auction David.

I would bet money on it that you don't be the last person to be conned this way

Helen

Your Google-Fu isn't very good then, cos searching for Aliens hand welder brings up a number of links, the fourth one on the first page only shows one seller and that's Spat.

Although, going into this blind, you wouldn't know who's a recaster and who's not, so always ask on here if in doubt. 8)

Be thankful you didn't end up with a POS one like Venger's PR and armour. :|

Plan is to replace the nitrogen springs with air cylinders. Use the CO2 system for the gun to pressurise the cylinders thru a regulator.
That way the "lift" of the arm can be adjusted to equal the weight of the gun rig using the regulator ! :D

Bit distracted at the moment.
My German Shepherd goes in for tumor removal surgery tomorrow morning,
so I am occupied with worrying myself sick.
Hoping for the best, preparing for the worst. :S

Alsatians are prone to skin problems like that - Mine had surgery a few times, but she came through every time and lived well into old age.

Thanks to both of you for your kind words and thoughts.
The surgery went well, and this morning he is on his feet,
ate his pills, as well as breakfast!
So it apears that all is well.
Words can hardly describe my relief and happiness!
Again, thank you Helen and Scapey for your support !
I appreciate it so very much !
Cheers!
