The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hi all,

Thanks,

Instead of a mechanical firing pin, the caseless rounds are detonated by an electrical pulse.

I always assumed the same as Scapey. The weapon fires caseless rounds, and the Tech manual shows that they're placed in the magazine in rows of three (helping to explain how so many rounds fit in there, but only slightly). Therefore the weapon fires with an electrical pulse similar to modern day Bullet Storm weapons.

Phased Plasma Pulse.
I always assumed this to be the projectile encased in a solid propellant, that instantly sublimates and ionises into a plasma, from the electronic pulse that is properly phased to achieve such.

Make sense? :D

Electrical priming isn't new. The M61A1 20mm gun for instance uses an electrical "firing pin":

"The round is fired by an electric priming system where an electrical current from a firing lead passes through the firing pin to the primer as each round is rotated into the firing position."

Something I noticed when they let us keep empty 20mm casings from the jets. The "pin strike" is not like a normal mechanical firing pin in any way.

I kinda thought the Phased Plasma comment was kinda related to the P.I.G. and the mixing of the names is a fluff/writing goof or who knows?

The P.I.G. is completely EU.

Hudson's "Phased Plasma Pulse Rifles" line stems from the original concept for the Marine's rifles; they were supposed to be beam weapons. Yep... lasers. Probably would have been similar to the Future War weapons in T1/T2.

Presumably Cameron has a thing about the "phased plasma" description after all doesn't Arnie ask for a "Phased Plasma Rifle in the 40 Watt Range" in the gunshop in Temrinator?

You know, I never made the connection between the Aliens SE Hudson scene where he is naming off the marine's weaponry and the gun shop line in Terminator. The "Phased Plasma" term was indeed used in both. It is obvious now that this was a technology that James Cameron envisioned. I am a little disappointed in myself that I never made the connection over all those years. I usually pickup on obscure trivia like that. If anyone is curious about real caseless ammunition check out the following articles linked to below. All three of these real world weapons were very cool and innovative designs. Unfortunately, the weapons were too complex and costly to build at the time so they were never produced.

I would have to agree with Kevin -- except, after hearing about that little border crossing incident... now I'm not so sure.

But think about it... what kind of a film would "Aliens" have been if all of the Marines kicked ass through truly superior firepower?

I'll tell you...

The movie would have been over in only 90 minutes.

And everyone survives at the end?

Boring.

Burke's action on the colony log would have been discovered and we'd have had several sequels as the Marines wage war against the Company.
