Post subject:  De Baena Data Card have I been sold a "Knock Off"?

Hi Guys,
I wonder if anyone here can help me with the following, I purchased this item on evilbay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0792846889 and after a little to and fro-ing over postage etc it was shipped to my "registered Paypal" address here in the UK.

My concern is that despite being described as "an original professional made Aliens M41-A pulse rifle Replica Data card made back in 2000 as a follow up to the amazing DB pulse rifle manuel" I believe it may actually be a knock off copy. :(
It has a white border around the four edges of about 5mm wide whereas the rest of the sheet is a pale cream/yellow colour it has Copyright DeBaena Productions 2000 and the printing is of nice clear and glossy quality even if it is a fake. Also for a relatively limited item the seller has another on sale now and when he tried to cancel the sale during the postage negotiations had another on sale straight away which may or may not have been a pre-emptive sale of the one I'd bought.

Can anyone who either owns one or knows how to recognise them tell me if it is indeed genuine or not?

I'll try to post a couple of photo's of the item once I've managed to un-curl it from it's shipping tube roll.

Couldn't really answer the question on the PR card, however considering he is using Matsuo's picture of his nuBSG 1st season blaster (and might just be recasting Matt's gun)- it's probably a good guess the card is a forgery.

I think you have fulfilled your obligation to "report" possible recasting. It isn't a huge investment so enjoy the card. Nice find.
Keep in mind that almost all of our collector stuff is a copy in some way. I think the community tries to protect those people who walk the fine line of helping the prop community and making a business out of selling non-licensed stuff.

If more of these pop up then your post will help identify the seller as "one who goes too far". Then the seller will be forced to use one of their many other channels.

I do know that these Pulse Rifle Data Cards (and the Pulse Rifle Manual) that Derrick offered were pretty limited -- both in numbers produced and in timeframe which they were available. That said, I have seen originals pop up on eBay from time to time. Not very often, but they do. I don't know what original data cards go for, but Derrick's manuals usually go for between $50.00 and $100.00 USD.

Although I do not have one of Derrick's data cards, I believe they were printed on a beige cardstock (not glossy), and not white paper. What I do notice from the auction photos is that the colors look darker, very much like color photocopies would -- but that could just be the way he photographed them.

Here are images of the data card which I believe were originally posted by Derrick over 10 years ago...

Now then, regarding this particular auction/seller...

I do find it a little hard to believe that he has 3 or more ORIGINAL data cards available for sale -- even though he states in the auction "ONE ONLY!!!". Also, when you look at the seller's feedback, ALL of his items are PRIVATE. This is usually a clue that a seller is dealing in goods that are possibly 'controversial', or are causing a stir for them. It also does not bode well for them that they are using some of Matt's (Matsuo) photos to sell their goods. I also couldn't help notice that they seem to be selling a number of SD Studios Lawgiver kits as built-ups. Now I'm not saying these are recasts, however according to Steve (SD), the original molds are burned out and he is no longer offering his Lawgiver kit. So unless this seller did a bulk purchase with Steve, I don't know where he's getting his castings from.

Oh yeah... and that Halo SMG is also Matt's.

Hmmm...
