Post subject:  Let's talk helmets. Iv'e always wondered...

Tinkering around with my newly aquired TE helmet tonight and always wondered does anyone elses helmets earcup NOT line up with their ear? Every helmet ive owned/built following the screen used helmets for placement etc the earcup never sits over my ear but a good 1.5" below.

Ive repositioned the cup on my helmet so it covers my ear but it just looks off. The metal plate which the cup screws to almost completely cover the cup now :s

Do I just have a really odd sized head or really high ears?

Have you tried adjusting the liner? Mine would sit low when the earpiece was just hanging but pulling it in (as if listening to a transmission) it would actually cover my ear.

I see other folks wear their helms askew, tilted rakishly to the right - This not only looks Colonial Mariney, but raise the height of the earcup and stops it from swinging out so much!

considering the brim of the helmet would cover my eyes, the earcup being too low was the least of my worries!

Racal headset ftw

If you look in the film, everyone has their helmets crooked, Apone and Hudson especially. :)

I still need to put a spring on mine to keep the microphone/earpiece from slapping me in the head when I walk. :)

You just need one with a smaller/lower liner. 8)

Thanks guys! Im in the process now of recasting the earcup that came with my TE helmet so I can install the MIC a little more accurately and securely. Gunna mount it about half and inch higher up so itll look right still but actually be near my ear.

Does anyone know what kind of material was inside the padded section of the itex cup?

i simply used a set of standard ear defenders in mine - put the foam in first and then forced the oval padded ear section into the shape - it sat well with no glues as it was nice and tight.

the alternative i nearly went for was some Beyer Dynamic Velour Ear Cushions but there not cheap - i seem to find them on ebay around the 20 quid mark - by the time my b and q quick fix was done, and as an item which spends most of its life in a display cabinet it looks perfect to be honest - i guess it depends on how much perfection one wants ;)

heres my b and q effort:

That looks great! Looking at some screen shots it seems there was a thin rubber "skirt" on the pad that wraps around the edge of the cup just like on the red defenders above.

You will find that most of the top of the ear defenders are just touching the rim of the helmet when really they need to be about an inch into the helmet. It's just cutting the steel!

Plus, to stop the ear defender sticking out. I placed a strip of Aluminium between the liner, ear defender and plates. That why you never saw me with it sticking out. The reason why it never stuck out in the movie is because the plates where moved up. The plate that are hinged, the one connected to the ear defender is actually just above the rim of the helmet and the head band holds it in.

Comparing screen caps from the blu-ray today I know now for sure that the hinge and plates have to come up about 15mm. Luckily Terry has cut the gap for the hinge area this far into the helmet, he just mounted the top plate low down. Bit worried about having to un-do Terry's work but it shouldnt be too hard to drill out the rivets and bring everthing up a bit.

Never thought about it but mine fits correct....
Might be because I've got a big head...!
Had to make my own IR sight because even after cutting
out for another sight still had no room to mount it...

Terry's are all cut like that, but depends on the liner. The ones that were tilted. Hicks, Apone and Hudson had big heads. Hence why it tilted to correct the line with the ear. But, Muad'Dib. If it suites you, don't mess with it! =]
