Does anyone have a source for reasonably priced weavers of Scottish tartan fabric? The couple places I've contacted want a million yard order @ like $200 a yard! Which pretty much kills my idea. Any suggestions appreciated. And in case you're wondering, my idea looks something like this... Attachment: Pattern (c)2011 Russ Krook III. |

Tartan is ridiculously expensive! If you could live with printed material you could always try somewhere like Spoonflower. |

I mean offence here, however, are you Scottish or of direct descendence (Parents or Grandparents)? If not, why Tartan? |

And, if you can find a man at D*Con wearing trousers then he's being totally unoriginal! |

And because unless it's Tartan, what you're wearing... is a skirt. (That is just MY personal opinion. I'm a kilt snob, sorry.) And yes, I DO have Scottish Ancestry (long ago, but it's there). Incidentally, each branch of the US military has it's own tartan, as well as some law enforcement/fire department units as well. Although, after doing some more searching, the USMC tartan pattern/kilt are not authorized to be worn with any current issue USMC uniform. |

Sandy why shouldn't Russ want to wear a tartan of his own design? The Scots do NOT have a worldwide exclusive right to any pattern of woven lines and grids which might happen to get called Tartan! There are plenty of organisations worldwide which have their own "Tartans" the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Royal Canadian Air Force being 2 that spring to mind without even having to resort to Google! Apologies to our Canadian cousins for "picking on" them! While you're at it why not start a thread bitching about all the non Scots around the world who form Bagpipe Bands! And before you take offence I am descended from the Clan McPherson so stick that in your sporran and smoke it! |

I wear Grey Spirit tartan when I wear my kilt, because it looks awesome with my custom sporran and I don't like the tartan supposedly connected to my family's design. But USCM tartan would be pretty sweet. I'd stump up for another kilt if I knew a bunch of us were doing so I shall investigate weavage. |

I'd wear one, but then I've wanted a kilt for over 20 years. Price has always been an issue for me. I saw one site recently selling them for like $900! For $900 dollars it better have been bathed in the blood of Rob Roy! Scapey, I'd like to see your Grey Spirit tartan. |

Russ you could register the USCM tartan with the Scottish Register of Tartans as a 'Corporate' tartan - that is for a company, organisation or an informal group of individuals. This would check that a similar design doesn't already exist internationally on the Scottish Tartans World Register (STWR) and also ensure your design remains unique and copyrighted to you. I'm sure if you mentioned the charitable aspects of the USCM, UKCM. UACM etc groups that would go a way to helping the design/s being accepted. http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/guidance.aspx#creating In 2004, somebody registered a 'Hello Kitty' tartan, so I don't think an official USCM tartan will be an issue. I know. It's a riff on the rank patches from Aliens ( And I know the kilt is backwards, I just threw it onto the bed for a quick pic :p ) |

@armourer: I may do that! Thanks for the suggestion! @Scapey: cool! Thanks for sharing! And in case anyone can't figure it out, the colors in the tartan reflect those of the Colonial Marine armor: green, brown, grey and yellow/sand. I suppose I should have put a black swatch in there to represent the bugs here too? Any thoughts on that? I can adjust it before I submit it. |
