Post subject:  Finally! My Completed Marine!!!

I am so excited to finally show this off. This costume has been 4 years in the making and even longer in the planning. I literally just finished it tonight and we real quick did a photo shoot to share some preview pictures. I'll be debuting this at San Diego Comic Con on Sunday and can't wait to show it off! (p.s- the ab plate was left off intentionally as I am 5'2" and it looked ridiculous on so I decided not to use it). The armor is all fiberglass and cast off original Dietrich armor. Art Andrews did all of the assembly, attachments, much of the sharpening of the details, and of course the pics. I did the finish work and all the painting (based my paint scheme and colors on Frost's armor). The pulse rifle is Hollywood Collectibles that we weathered and put the right sling on (we plan to replace the grenade launcher but didn't get that done yet). Thanks for looking!

Yeah, I decided not to do the helmet as I've tried one on before and it looked ridiculously huge (like a little kid playing dress-up) so planned to do just the headset.

ummm shall i pint out the logic in "like a little kid playing dress-up" vs "like a adult playing dress-up"??? LOL just saying....but na the suit looks good and damn i can't wait to get a 2nd PR, i miss the BB rifle

That looks great! :D It's all come together really well and the paint job looks spot on. Shame we're on different continents, would love to see it in person.

I don't blame you not using the ab plate. And the pulse rifle will cover it up most of the time so I doubt anyone will notice.

Good job, Marine!

Welcome to the fabtastical world of USCM! Hope to see you hang out with us at DCon for some pics.

I'd tone it down with the blush if I were you, though. You're a Marine; bumpy Marine or not, you have to look salty.

Incredibly cool, Kristen!!!

You may recall the looooong discussion on the RPF about women in slinky costumes vs women in realistic costumes? THIS is what makes a woman look awesome!!!
I'll take you over a hundres Slave Leias any day. You look fully geared up and ready to rock, like a proper soldier... as in, you look like you can actually DO stuff and kick arse, rather than some silly girl in a pseudo-bikini outfit with a big sword or something.

I had a good look over these photos and I have to say, they'd make excellent posters.
I would suggest a USCM recruitment thing. You look very 'field-dayed and squared away' in these, particularly with those sleeves so perfectly rolled (you have military experience, perhaps?). Properly smart and ready for parade, Marine!!

Good call on the leather holster thong. Not a lot of people think about that one.

I'd be interested to see an 'in combat' look from you, too - that big ring would need covering over, nails clipping and everything needs to be proper dirty!!
EDIT: Crossposted this with Dom.

You have certainly done well!!!

Nicely done Kristen! :delta:

Finally!

I remember you mentioning wanting to do a USCM impression as far back as 2006!

The paint job turned out absolutely amazing!

So we're dying to know what paint numbers you used for the scheme- this actually might be one of the best screen accurate paint jobs I've seen yet!

(One thing I just have to point out though- the quick release buckles for the grenade straps were painted green, not brown bess. Hate mentioning it, however I'm sure Art would appreciate knowing as he is so precise.)

Welcome to the Corps Marine! Get on the Ready Line!

Once again well done!

Hi Kristen,

looks like the four years wait were well spend! That's a really nice outfit with a great paintjob.
Judging from the second picture I'd suggest to add some foam padding (maybe a centimeter or two) to the shoulder area. That way the armor would sit a little higher (might look better, but test it first) and you might be able to add the abdomen armor plate.
Usually, it takes a few events to find a good compromise between looks, comfort and practicality.

Cheers,
Stefan

Well done! May I ask what took so long? Was it just getting all the stuff together?

I've had three different sets of armor over the last ten to fifteen years and I JUST started working on the current set a few weeks ago!

Post subject:  Re: Finally! My Completed Marine!!!

Thank you all so much! Your words and compliments mean so much to me! I also need to give a huge shout out and thank you to Steve Radler whom without him, I never would have gotten this armor. He also helped me along the way with advice and support and came through with the most awesome stuff ever for me to use to weather my armor !

I appreciate all your input. I agree- the blush I generally try and do more than usual when taking pics but will keep it in mind when I do more and when I troop. I also do plan to dirty up myself with some Fuller's when I troop on Sunday. The nails I know, they are over the top LOL! But I wanted pretty nails for Comic Con :D I will be shortening them when I get back for work and so they won't be so crazy for my next pics. I may even file them a little before trooping. Also, I'll leave my rings off in my next photoshoot too. Great advice everyone! Gotta look salty!

@Ttaskmaster- thank you! I do remember that thread and I thank you so much! I love doing stuff like this. It may not show off my curves as nicely and I must admit, the pants with my tight leg armor is not so flattering for my size, but I look bad ass and I love it!!! I gotta giggle about the sleeves- no military experience, just looked at Hicks and how he had his. Not to mention, the sides of the armor stick out a lot and dig into my arms so the rolling gives me some padding there and makes it more comfortable.

@SSgt Burton Yup, I remember and I'm almost sure I saw you guys at my first D*con and fell in love in '04. Been a long road but totally worth it! And I can totally paint up those quick release buckles no problem! As for my paint numbers. I did a lot of reading on here and talked with Radler, did some testing and comparisons on my own as well. I completely disagreed with #30 for the green- it is way too close to 91 (the black green) and looked awful on my armor. So I used 76 for the green. Once weathered it looked perfect. Took Radler's advice after originally using 160 for the brown I changed to 186 and am pleased with the result. I did not use 110 for the yellow- too tan in my opinion although I do believe Hudson's armor (I think it was his) may have used this color as it is different than some of the other armor. I went with 63 for the yellow instead. Looks way to yellow on but once weathered I feel it is dead on. I used 91 for the black green and 147 for the light grey accents. I used Heavenly Hues in black( discontinued but Radler sent me some) for all the weathering.

@ Bug Stomper- We tried not to add a thick layer of the bed roll padding, but tried to keep it screen accurate. Will see how it goes on Sunday but felt quite comfortable yesterday surprisingly! But after trooping all day with that heavy pulse rifle slung around, I might feel different LOL!

@Dropshipbob A lot of things. The armor just sat for a very long time. Life got in the way, work, etc. We started working on it again after Comic Con last year, then it sat again. Not until maybe- Feb? this year did we break it out again and really hit it hard. I've been working pretty much daily since maybe April to get it finished. So it really didn't take that long, just took that long for me to get off my arse and get it done :)

Of course there's no helmet! Why would you want to mess up that hair?

Excellent job on the armor and PR. Thank for sharing it with us!

Great job Kristen!! Looks AWESOME!! I remember when you tried on my 1st set of armor at Art's place in GA, during that photoshoot in '06. I know I bugged ya enough to get a set done! I remember something like you said I have to get a set of SST armor first...& I did!

So, do you remember that first pic of you in armor?

Now, WHAT COLORS DID YOU USE?! That is a superb job of painting also!!!!! :delta: :delta:

No they were black buckles painted green. Not entirely sure what colour code of green, but probably the base green of the armour itself.

Here's a pic of Frost's armour showing the buckles:

The buckles look slightly darker than the base green of the armour.

Here is another good one-

So this might be a slightly blurry, over-exposed continuity Polaroid, however it clearly shows the difference in colour between something like the Flamethrower (which is definitely Brown Bess), and the buckles which are green.

(And I must say again that it kills me to point this out, but I'm sure you want this to be as accurate as you can get it.)

EDIT- I just read your reply Kristen when I went to post this. I'm so glad you've finally brought this costume together! The painstaking research and time spent has paid off in spades! And many thanks for the colour codes you used!

See, I disagree - There's a reason why folks love people in uniform. This is it.
You can wear the sexiest, slinkiest, Ann Summers-iest outfit on the planet, but if you don't look like you're capable of doing what is insinuated by the photo set-up, it ain't worth squat. You just look like a pretender.
A proper military get-up like this with enough practical details makes all the difference. You look gorgeous because you look badass!!

@ Hollis DZC Oh man, I had forgotten about that! If you have a picture, we need to see that!!! I also posted up the colors right above your post, probably didn't get to see that.

@Bug Stomper- Damnit! Yeah, I just looked at those pics too and well I guess I know what I am doing at lunch today LOL! And if I don't get to do it, I'll hit them when I get back home.

@ Ttaskmaster Thank you!!! I appreciate the support!
