The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I recently bought the DVD of the Thing (prequel) and I noticed in the bonus that one of the sfx-person was wearing a "Nostromo" t-shirt !
Pretty funny how connections can be made through movies !

Keen eye spotting the Nostromo t-shirt Svenza.

I hadn't even realised the prequel was out on DVD yet! I'll be adding it to my collection now... Still preferred the John Carpenter original though. 8)

Cheers.

John. :)

Hi Helen

Yeah, I'm a big fan of most of Carpenters early stuff. Don't get me wrong though I still enjoyed last years prequel. Not a bad effort & stuff like this can turn out a whole lot worse... AVP being a prime example. LOL!

All the best.

John. :)

Old kurt would make a great Solid Snake if they ever got a metal gear film off the ground. I loved escape from NY and the thing. Got the thing on bluray. I was not so keen on the prequel but it was not too bad. I can see there being a follow up taking place after the original now though.

I loved big trouble in little china, a classic film. I dont remember the fog but the newer film 'the mist' is good. I found the ending very shocking.

I thought 'The thing' prequel was an utter mess and filled with "WTF did you do that for?" and "That made no sense at all" bits.
I didn't like the overuse of CGI and adding 'action' parts purely to show off the CGI monster. Did the film makers not watch John Carpnters version? Did they not understand the 'less is more' concept? Did they not grasp the fact that paranoia and NOT knowing who the creature was, was what made the film so great?

Wait....What was this thread about again? Oh yeah - the tshirt. Nope I didn't notice it, but that is pretty funky.

Lol you should get a topic derailment box. Everytime you derail a topic you have to put £1 in it. By the end of the month you will be broke but when you break that sucker open you could take yourself, paul and sis on holiday lol. Or supply us newbies with spat armour

Lol, we love you really, your a nice distraction. (Disclaimer: i do not approve, support, endorse topic derailment. It should be frowned upon and anyone caught doing it should be locked in a cell with a facehugger for company. Right, that's my ass covered  )

I didn't notice about the fonts !
Good point.

Regarding the thing, I miss the old-fashioned way of building monsters (like in Alien btw) and what is also missing was the strong paranoia feeling. Otherwise I have already watched it 4 times !

Prince of Darkness is indeed VERY creepy and Big trouble in little china has a special atmosphere... I always hoped the would make a sequel ! I really like Kurt Russel, he is an excellent actor !

Big Trouble in Little China..Fantastic...so many in jokes and timing looks. Very Funny and also Smart.

Original The Thing best by far to the prequal. Computer graphics are not a match for real models and animatronics IMO

The FOG good too and of course Dark Star

Well this thread has moved along. Good to see so many other Carpenter fans on here. :D

Hicks, I'm with you on the special effects. CGI has its place but clever, professional quality modelling & animatronics still have it hands down for creatures etc. 8)
Don't know how I forgot about Dark Star! His college dissertation, or similar, if I recall correctly. Another classic & hilarious stuff! The original Halloween is worth a mention too.

Got to say I've never seen Prince of Darkness. I think he originally directed this under a pseudonym (??). Sounds like it's worth checking out though.

I didn't like Vampires & thought Ghosts of Mars was terrible but has anyone here seen another of his later films, They Live? If so what do you reckon?

Cheers.

John. :)

P.S; Helen, if I see Kurt on hols in Skiathos later in the year I'll tell him you said Hi!

I thought they live was agood concept but kinda hokey. Its been years since ive seen POD but i put that right in the same category as Hellraiser (not a carpenter film) Just left me with a very creepy feeling. Oh and Im watching Alien on IFC right now. Back to topic

'They live' starring 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper. The inspiration for Duke Nukem! It's a cool film.
'Halloween' in my opinon is the greatest horror film ever made.
