The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Ok I've got those pics of the different covers:

Red Beret:

Image

Although I'm not a fan of berets for this uniform, this actually looks pretty cool to me. But it does kinda remind me of Tom Cruise in TAPS-

Black Beret:

And finally that CF Navy service cap:

Image

The one I purchased has no chin strap- it might be generic and not genuine CF issue. It's ok. I think it might look better with a white band around the middle rather than black. Couple of pros are that a vinyl cover is standard on it, and it will be much easier to attach a Challenge Coin to the center band (by adding some kind of metal arm to the back of the coin).

In a discussion with Dom- we mused about how the Marine service cover has a very distinctive shape. I believe it is the wide brim. Personally the USMC cover is my favourite. The CF Navy cap is number two.

Though not involved in this project.....let me just give an observation.

Red beret...looks too much like militarty school.

Black beret....looks better.

Service hat...looks best.

Red beret- BEAUTIFUL compliment to the red piping. I love it.

White forage cap- Looks awesome.

I don't want anyone to think that I totally hate black berets, not so. I am a black beret in the Canadian army (unlike US army, we're colour-coded) and I love my black beret. I just don't feel it works with this uniform.

US Army is sort of color coded.

Black - regular troops (used to be Rangers)
Maroon - Airborne
Tan - Rangers
Green - Special Forces

USAF Security Police - Dark Blue

The USMC seems to hate berets, and will jam them up your tailpipe if you try and get them to wear it.

Anyhow, I like the service caps best - USMC and then the Canadian one. Black beret before the red.

Well let's see.

Black Beret looks great (although it does almost look more like it's from space above and beyond)

Red Beret I would say 2nd after Black.

White service cap very nice.

With the planned detail at DCon we should really get this ironed out and all the specs put in a thread together.

So anyone know good spot for a 42R dress coat?

Careful is the word here bro, they run incredibly small. I've a 44" chest, and a size 44 is tooooo darn small. :?

USAF has other color berets as well:

Red = Combat Controllers
Maroon = Pararescue Jumpers
Brown = TacP (I could be wrong about this color...)

I can sympathize with you...

A few years ago I went to GateCon (Stargate convention in Vancouver, Canada) and there was a guy there that had flown in from France to attend the con. He had on a reproduction of General Hammond's AF Service Dress uniform. While it makes me uneasy to see civilians in our uniforms, I usually don't say anything to them about it.

Well, this guy had screwed up putting on the ribbon rack to the point it was irking me. So I went over to him and, very politely and professionally, informed him that I am an active duty AF member and that his ribbon rack was placed incorrectly on his uniform.

He proceded to scream at me in a mixture of French and English about how his was recreated from a picture of the uniform and I couldn't possibly know that it was wrong.

What a DBag.

Nah, I had seen the image he used and the way Hammond was sitting caused his rack to shift slightly upwards at an angle. Maybe a frog popped off the back, I dunno.

That'll teach me to offer friendly advice to a stranger...

Honestly you should.

I wear a 40 suit jacket with room to spare. My USMC Dress Blues tunic is a 41S.

I can barely squeeze into it. And doing up the huge collar hook is a pain in the neck (  ). A 42S would probably fit me best- but finding anything over 40 in a short size was hard enough.

As you know I hate the Sulaco patch on the dress uniform so I binned it - I also moved the wings pin.

How about it with black/matching blue buttons:
Image
(OK you can't exactly see the buttons in this mockup but I thought it'd give it a more modern look)

Or all silver:

Just popping in with my two pence.

I like that last version with the blacked out buttons. Makes it look a bit more 'futuristic'.

I think it need something else though, to differentiate from a real uniform. It's a shame to loose the Sulaco patch as it did the job but I agree that it did look completely out of place on a dress uniform. I know you've got the Delta pins but it really needs something that people can see from a distance.

Oh yeah Black buttons cool.

The patch on or off has couple bennies of eack like was said.

1. it really stands out and would be less likely yo be confused with an actual military uniform.

2 it looks smokin with out it.

Maybe seeing about a round pacth done up in black and silver , like the shoulder patch, but either smaller or round?

Wow is it hard finding any jackets bigger then a 40 right now. hehe.

I prefer it with the buttons. To me it just looks missing without them.

While it looks great w/ the silver buttons, I really like the black buttons. It does give it a futuristic look, and completely denies the USMC "look".

For dress uniforms, I found mine at this site:

Guys selling their old uni's... :)

I do not like the black buttons. It looses some smartness- makes it look less like a dress/parade uniform and more like a coat.

In all honestly what would be wrong with smooth brass/gold buttons?

And as much as I was against having patches on the uniform- I'm beginning to see just how much a uniform like this demands them.

Even the Screaming Eagle.

I'll be putting a Sulaco patch on mine as shown.
