The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I wasn't 100% sure whether the frame is all one piece or not... but it makes more sense if they did find an item like that and 'fill' it with the workings.

It may not mean anything, but the two pairs of screwholes under 'loading bay' and '01' seem to match up with the ones at the bottom.

The picture with black/yellow stripes for the grip looked somewhat wrong to me. I assume you made it in such a way that the stripes continue endlessly (e.g. they don't end after one turn). I've toyed with my 3D program and now I'm pretty sure that in the original the stripes end after one turn. (I guess I'll have to post a picture....)

Cheers,
Stefan

Looking at the original prop in the first post, the stripes do continue around the whole grip. :)

My render doesn't look exactly like the original, but then on the original no two stripes are the same width, or at the same angle.

I did assume that the stripes are continuous. I didn't see any other way to do it.

I took as a starting point the fact that each stripe is exactly one third of the length.

Image

Once you know that, there's only one way for it to work.

If you have a look at the stripes where they cross the (virtual) centerline of the grip, you'll notive that the original crosses the line at about 45 degrees while in your redering it's about 60 degrees.
It's too late right now, but I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Cheers,
Stefan

It's only a mock up at the moment, don't have a coronary about it.

Looking again at the original and going by what Mike said of the different widths/angles, I think they probably made the stripes with two cans of spray paint and some masking tape wrapped around the handle to cover one of the 'stripes'. :)

the yellow stripe maybe even is some kind of electric tape
if you look at the left bottom of the handle youll see it is not flat but somehow "lifted"

Actually... there is only one way for it to work and it's this way :)

Image

There are 2 spirals of yellow tape that each go 3/4 the way round, not 1 spiral that goes round 1.5 times.

I really don't want to bash Mike's work - he has done more than one amazing job with his stuff!

However, I think the propmakers didn't care if the stripes really go all around. The result would looks like this:
Image

Original on top, front render in the middle and bottom render at the bottom (this is the least visible place for the stripes to meet).

As you can see the horizontal width of the stripes is the same as on Mike's render (1/3 of the width of the handle) but the stripes cross the centerline at the 45 degree angle I mentioned above. The downside is that you have the seamline which is not as nice as Mikes version without it.

Cheers,
Stefan

Jon,

that was my initial thought too. However, this only works for one aspect ratio (diameter to length of the cylinder) and it's sadly not the aspect ratio of the handle (unless the auction image aspect ratio is messed up).

Cheers,
Stefan

Jon,
that's an interesting screenshot!
The stripe pattern on my version countinues on the back too (I placed the seam line at the bottom e.g. in the direction of the lever) but the stripe pattern looks differend on the back side.

Cheers,
Stefan

Also, maybe more than one panel was made, so the stripes might be subtly different.
