The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Yea sorry but that pretty much nullified any and all credit in your review. Like we need another person comparing it to Modern Warfare.

So what would you compare a new FPS game to then in terms of it's quality in the departments of graphics, sound, playability, stability and so on? After all, isn't it common in making a comparison to use something else in the same field ( as in this case, modern First Person Shooters). I'll spare following suite and using the rolleyes emote for now.

I am a true hater of MW2. If Infinity Ward had gotten their hands on AVP it would have gone like this...

1) About 4 hours long...IN TOTAL

2) A story that made zero sense. Never mind...that's insulting the word "Zero". Let me change that to "What the F is going on and why am I able to finish this game on my lunch break?? Did I not pay $59.99 for this? Where's the rest of the game?? Wait there isn't a rest of the game?????? This is freakin it???"

3) Multiplayer that is twitch die twitch kill twitch twitch twitch on a map about the size of a postage stamp (although I will admit at least it works...AVP is kinda broken that way right now). Oh and don't forget the Cheat Cheat Cheat shoot through walls cheat cheat cheat run triple fast cheat cheat cheat.

4) Absolutely NO interest in working together as a team on any map...at all. Cause then you couldn't unlock your special game ruining "perk". Cause "perks" are way better than playing as a team right?

5) No dedicated servers (which AVP will have shortly) which is just an insult to PC gaming.

I could go on and on. So ya THANK GOD Infinity Ward didn't get their paws on this game.

/rant end. :P

What should this game be compared to if not modern warfare 2? Halo 3, Dead Space, ODST, Call of duty 4? Honestly it just falls short. And i was really looking forward to it, i just think it could of been so much more.

Iam gonna be taking full advantage of Gamestop's "Crappy game clause". They let you return it for full credit within the first 30 days.

If an FPS game is all you saw AVP as, then i'm not even going to bother writing a long, drawn out post carefully explaining why I think you're sadly mistaken in your comparison. It's not like it's going to win GOTY but it was by no stretch of the imagination a "bad game" of which i've played several over the years.

If categorising this game as an FPS one and then making a comparison to it, I did so because I dont consider that there is any other game genre that AVP can be better categorised in. It's first person, it involves shooting and killing, running around, deathmatch, domination and so on. Yes there are melee attacks in it and three distinctly different classes to play but if it doesn't fit into the simplistic and well known category of being a FPS game then what is it; a first-person hunter-shooter-killer hybrid just to satisfy the pedantics?

For what it's worth, scrolling through a slack handful of various reviews and articles online seem to reiterate my viewpoint:

It's unlikely to be your go-to online shooter.

Not when so many slick and exciting shooters are on store shelves, vying for your time

Sega and developer Rebellion have picked up the AvP IP in order to bring gamers a first-person shooter.

but in Aliens vs. Predator - the first-person shooter that sees Rebellion return to the universe

It’s old-school, a shooter from a decade past

Ten years ago, Rebellion surprised PC gamers with a stellar first-person shooter based on the Alien and Predator franchises ~ The basic concept remains the same

It's a much more straightforward first-person shooter

but at the end of the day there are just too many better FPS games out there.

when compared to other first-person shooter titles on the market, the difference is clear.

Bringing the most intense war between two of science-fiction’s most popular characters FPS fans

First-person shooter
where you play as human space marines, but also the iconic Predator and Alien bad guys

but in Aliens vs. Predator - the first-person shooter that sees Rebellion return to the universe

Players shouldn't approach Aliens vs. Predator expecting a typical first-person shooter. While there are segments that are, indeed, right in line with other games in the genre, Rebellion once again thought it wise to split the story into three parts

If nothing else, it feels completely different from just about every other FPS on the market

this first person adventure lets you experience the action from three different perspectives

This first-person shooter from Rebellion

The problem is that Rebellion's shooters haven't come very far in the last 10 years

Clearly from that lot above it would suggest that, in your eyes, I'm in the company of a lot of 'sadly mistaken' and misguided people, . But I don't think I am and nor are they so the comparison I made is arguably valid and relevent. For the reasons I gave I stand by the opinion that MW2 is a good benchmark for comparison for the following reasons. It looks and sounds good, it plays smoothly and it is a polished and well presented product. In my opinion AVP could have been up there on equal terms with regard to these things but I don't see that it is which is a real shame but there you go. And please don't go thinking you're the only one here that's seen bad games over the years. I'm sure I'm not alone here in having seen a lot of games come and go since the days of the ZX Spectrum and onwards and can't think of many FPS games I havn't played since Doom appeared. Some were terrible, some ok and some excellent. AVP is in the middle there, neither great nor shocking but stuck in the middle being decidedly average. Perhaps the biggest worry there is that with mixed reviews and a somewhat luke warm reception it may jeopardise ACM being finished which looked on paper to be the better game :(

We should make sure that we post often and at great length about the bad points in the game. We should argue with anyone who likes the game. Emphasise the negative! That'll help A:CM!

I like AvP.

I haven't tried the full game online yet (never see anyone else on my friends list that's either playing it or even has it to play).

I like the single player game.

I'm not that good at FPS games, even the 'great' ones;

Halo games: Never got far in the single player and in online I last no more than two seconds before having to respawn. In Halo 3 online I spent more time respawning than actually playing.
Call of Duty games: Same as Halo games.

AvP lets me get a fair way through it in single player (to enjoy the experience of the game world) and in the demo online I actually stayed alive long enough to have fun and even managed the odd kill or two.

AvP gets my vote. 8)

With regards to the graphics of AvP against that of MW2, I would note that the focus of the engines are on very different things. MW2 engine, pretty as it is, wouldn't work for AvP. MW2 environments are very much static in the lighting effects. AvP requires all the lights to be dynamic which is a hefty feat. The Aliens have to able to knock out lights, the marine's shoulder lamps need to illuminate the darkness, and you need lots of scary shadows cast on the wall. That and the AvP engine needs to support multiple vision modes, with a combination of shaders in the surfaces and screen effect shaders.

Apples to oranges with regards to tech.

Funny how no-one complains about the lack of iron-sights in Halo, or Unreal Tournament.

Just because one game has a feature, does it mean every game afterwards needs it?

I remember when the Honda DN-01 came out.
A very different looking motorcycle altogether and every single reviewer called it a Scooter.

Honda officially call it a Sports Cruiser. It's not a step-through and therefore not a Scooter anyway, but it's also a Cruiser with Sports styling and performance.

If enough people use the same term, however wrong that term is, the rest will assume it to be correct. It's called a commonplace. Like the old ones of "Beam me up, Scotty" and "Ello, my name's Michael Caine".

What do Rebellion/SEGA call it?

Having played MW2 I can say that I enjoyed it but once I was done with the SP I trade it in for something else.

This game however I foresee playing over and over.

I personally enjoyed it. THe story left a LITTLE to be desired, and the Alien campaign was WAY to short.

Being a big fan a first person shooters, I enjoy Modern Warfare and such games, but your talking to genres of First-Person shooters. Realistic war, and sci-fi. The graphics on BOTH games are amazing. I DO miss the iron sights as stated above. You get used to something and then when you don't have it you get frustrated. I was really impressed with MW2 when it came out, and even more so with AvP with the lights, and shadows, and environments. I think they did a great job!! Granted you need a DX11 card to take FULL advantage on a PC, but still... even with DX10 hardware is was awesome.

The guns didn't bother me one bit. The look or anything. It's a new timeline, and they were bound to upgrade them anyway (think... m16 to m16-a2... or a3 and a4 for that matter). I was sad the Pred didn't get as many weapons as in previous games, but I like each character in different ways. The story was annoying in some aspecs with...

** SPOILER** There being TWO Weyland's. They mention Acheron yet, Carl Bishop Weyland is still alive and well. (unless they BOTH were droids) SOme time lines just didn't add up...
** END SPOILER**

Would I say game of the year?? No... but I really liked it. Solid 7.5... Since i'm in a realtively good mood, i'll give it an 8 out of 10. :)

Cause it worked well with the rest of the gameplay style. I for one dont think iron sights would of helped here. It would have left you way to open to alien attacks. They even shoot form the hip in the movies.

But overall good for you if you are happy with the game, i mean it is an aliens forum after all.

Sorry, these kind of comments always get my back up as a developer. I don't know a single developer who ever wants to make a bad game. Now if we could just get the publishers to give us unlimited time and funds we could all achieve our gameplay visions. Daaaaamaaaa yoooouuu market forces and deadlines *shake fist at sky*

(there is a whole other factor of planning and schedules that can come into play, too. But that's an ongoing 100 page thread on a developer forum   )

Yes I can only agree with you 100% on this as I have witnessed first hand this past month what ridiculous deadlines can do to a game.

Star Trek Online was to me the last opportunity to have a chance to enjoy an interesting MMO environment, I was going in with a very open mind and hoping for the best.

But the stupid deadline that either CBS or Paramount or whatever powers that be gave Cryptic to come up with a functional game has forced them to cut crucial corners so that as it is now the game feels unpolished, full of typos, plot holes and essentially few people want to spend 15$ a month on it.

I think the gaming industry is now caught in a sort of catch 22 where they have a ton of people who have bills to pay and a market that is more and more demanding and yet has no clue what it wants, so pushing out product becomes the priority regardless if it's good or not.

When it comes to tabletop gaming I've always said that your enjoyment on the game is dependent on who you play it with, and I think that for games like AVP the same can be said, yes it might have a few flaws but if you can find a bunch of blokes who can look beyond that then you can have a ton of fun with the game.

So it is on that thought that I hope to see you guys online in a game very soon

ok here is my views on the game
i think it looks great
i enjoy playing it it is a good game and each campaign for the different characters is in itself a different game
it has kept the vide and feel of the original avp games
i have been face hugged and u just keel over and die
as for the lack of iron sights i have adjusted to it
and tbh i have more fun online with it than playing mw:2
also the new armour is really growing on me
but i still dont like the pulse rifle
but basically if you like the game crack on if not simply dont play it

I'm loving the start of the Alien single-player. The Intro/Tutorial is cute.

I'm not sure what to think about people calling me "Number 6"; it makes me want to stalk around the game wearing a red dress with a blonde wig stuck to my carapace ... ;)

:xeno:

TBH, I haven't got far with any of the single-player parts because the multiplayer is too much fun! Coredeath: I got your invite but was eating. By the time I finished, you were well into a game and didn't want to interrupt.
