The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I always thught the greeblies were attached to plates and then stuck in place. I've seen a couple of photos showing the flapping you mention but I think this is just where it has come unstuck. The ear defenders dont look flat enough to me or go far enough back into the rounded recess. Also, if that were the case would it not mean that ALL the photos would show them swaying free on both sides of the helmet?

Cheers

Darren

I agree, I'm going to go the flat plate route.

I fixed the missing 'ring' problem by following Harry's suggestion, and added a new detail to replace the oversized knob.

The assembly is mounted on a flat disk, with additional detailing on the disk surface. In these pics I'm just holding the disk in place inside the helmet with my hand.

Since I'm getting quite a bit of interest in this project, I'm going to throw out an open question to anyone who has the apprpriate experienence:

What is the best way to go about molding this part?

Ideally, I would like to be able create a one-part mould for the main assembly, but given the amount of undercuts involved, I'm not sure that demoulding would be possible.

I don't want to pull it apart and mould separate pieces unless absoluteley necessary.

I'm used to using a Shore A30 rubber, which is definiteley too rigid for this project.

Any suggestions welcome :)

Is there a way you could cast the base piece (with the Megatron part on it) then provide a template for the 'bridge' piece perhaps, so that the builder can cut and make that from plastic card?

It's either that or fill all the undercuts with clay before you mould it, which I suspect wouldn't yield good results.

Harry

Or you can send it to FNG for casting

More Transformer parts revelations over on the RPF thread. I'm way out of my depth with these parts, there are so many variations on releases and scales. Is there a Tranformer expert in the house?

Edit: Just scored what I believe to be the correct Macross Tomahawk kit as mentioned in the RPF thread. Yay.

PS:

Russ, if you really want it in pink, I'm sure that can be arranged.

As for the cables:
I just had a chat with Stephan (Pulseriflefan) and he told me that the cable from the Hama pistol grip was used on the helmet sight of Spunkmeyer's helmet - it's longer than the normal ones.

Here's the picture he provided:

The cable release is available separately, in both the 25cm and 50cm Lengths.

hama.co.uk
50cm
#00005335

*edit

Checking my notes, I see that a select model number of the pistol grip comes with a 65 cm (25.6 in) cable.
But, imo I believe that is actually too much cable, and considering there are multiple chromed cable heads visible on the helmet, it must have been constructed with a few (smaller than 65cm) cables.

I'm thinking the long one is the 50cm.

If you look at those pictures earlier in this thread, you can see on the ones that are "swinging free" that it has broken the two ridges (meant to look like conduits?) that go from the scratchbuild up onto the shell of the helmet. I'd say they were firmly attached.

Still wondering if the sizes correspond to normal "hat" sizing... I think I'm a size Large, as I wear a 7 1/4 hat...in this helmet does it matter too much if I went up to a size XL if I can't find a L?

Is the only difference between an SPH-4 and a 4B the visor mount? I'm assuming it is possible to switch between them if I'm able to find parts helmets? And has anyone used the other branches' helmets (navy, etc) and had to paint them, I've seen quite a few white ones up for sale.

Parts are generally interchangeable between variants so you should (I would think, I don't know this model for certain) be able to mix and match if you find the parts.

Helmets have a fair ammount of internal adjustment. Although I couldn't say whether an XL could be comfortably substituated for a L.

It might be best to start a separate thread for general info about the SPH helmet incase this one gets cluttered up and strays away from the topic of identifying and building the greeblies :)

However, since I'm posting here anyway. I dont know about the difference in the visor mounts sorry but I have a head circumference of approx 64cm I think and I just fit nicely into an XL sized helmet if thats any help.

Also, I bought a white one and sprayed it OD. The only annoying thing is taking them apart to do the spraying but otherwise it came out very nicely and you cant really tell the difference after. That said I also resprayed the OD one that I got anyway.

Cheers

Darren

64!?! Blimey!
That's about a US size 8.

Gomi_ If you wear a size 7 1/4 that's about 59 for comparison to Friendly's 64.

Still collating :)

For the right side the Megatron G1 part is a cert. I strongly suspect that the 'tower' section is also a Tranformer/Robotech/Macross part (you can see what resemble plane fins in there)

As I understand it, on the left: The green section has been identified as a Macross Tomahawk section. Scale is uncertain, but likeley 1/100th. I will be able to say either way when I get my kit.

The red part is likeley a variation on a Transformers Jetfire (Valkyrie) backpack. Yet to be positiveley Id'ed.

The part is similar to the handwelder switch, which seems to be of more interest to the guys on the RPF thread.

Birdie,

working on the other stuff as well ;)
Btw: The Tomahawk part even includes the tube shaped part at the bottom (the hip of the Tomahawk). The part with the three nozzles seems to match the shape of the middle section of gun of the Revell Trigon or Drifand Dale (looks as this is the same kit).

Cheers,
Stefan

Stefan,

Got any thoughts on the main section? Looks like some kind of pump or gear.
