The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

For me it always looked like a direction indicator from a bike.

Could be both...the cut-out on the 'stalk' ( with the knobs and screws) is quite irregular, as is some of the detail on top of the eyepiece. Looks like styrene sheet.

On the other hand, the rubber edging around the eyepiece (decayed in some of Harry's pics) looks very 'clean' in screencaps.

It wasn't a clue, it was a dig at the fact that nobody seems to have taken on board what I've said about the SG eyepiece on more than one... in fact at least more than two occasions. ;)

I'm not going to repeat all the details (again!) - you can use the search function for that - but for the record I own a screen-used original, so I think it's fair to say that I'm in quite a good position to comment on how it was probably made. :)

Harry,

I've only been researching this prop for the last few months, and have searched for and read all the threads devoted to the smartgun headset and the only comments I found from you were concerning the paintscheme.

If you run a search for individual posts on 'smartgun headset', it returns 737 hits. I simply don't have time to wade through that volume of material.

I have read in some of the SG sight threads that the eyepiece was fabricated by the propmasters, but have never seen that information directly attributed to anyone.

Sorry if you feel you are going over old ground, I have done my best trying to find info on the piece, I obviously managed to miss something. We are not all 'as close to the source' as you.

Cheers,

Simon

I did a search for 'Headset' and put 'Harry Harris' in the 'author' field and got 3 results.

It's page 2 of this thread here.

Before this thread goes off the rails and into O.T. territory perhaps a new thread should be started for the SG headset.

Apologies for the hijack - carry on! ;)

Harry

Yeah, but Harry, I didn't know that I should be searching for your name, did I? Not psychic yet :P

Carry on...

Edit: If anyone wants to talk about the SG headset, please go here:

I'll be greatful for any input.

Back to Helmet topic.

Just scored an Axoid model kit today.

Thanks to Bugstomper + PRfan for getting the polaroid.

Harry,

do you have a picture showing the small cylinder on the mounted sight unit while it was still attached (e.g. from the time of the Tech Manual shooting)?

Cheers,
Stefan

I'm away on tour at the moment and won't be home again until mid February at the earliest, but when I get home I'll have a look at my photos and if I've got it, I'll post it! :)

I realised I had the enclosed photo on my laptop. If you mean the part that was where 'B' is indicated I don't think I have any shots of that but I will check as I think I've got a photo taken by Terry Reed of Jenette wearing her SG headset, which would have been taken during the early stages of production I expect.

Regarding the photo below, I'm almost certain 'A' is vacuum formed as well as it's quite thin plastic. 'B' is where something was stuck on but isn't there now, revealing the grey styrene underneath.

The raised detail shape on the eye cup has been cut from styrene sheet and glued on to the cup.

Oh, there was a slight misunderstanding - I was refering to Spunkmeyer's helmet mounted sight unit. This picture shows a black spot here the part should be located:

http://forum.alienslegacy.com//files/dsc_0011_178.jpg

However, thanks for the SG-sight picture - that'll help too. :)
The ridged part in the recess looks like it might be done from the unused half of the seeker cover of the polaroid.

Cheers,
Stefan

Oops, sorry about that.

I definitely don't have any photos of the Spunkmeyer helmet with me but I'll see what I have when I get home.

Which ridged part do you mean?

I presume Stefan is referring to what I've now marked as 'C' in the photo above.

Ah right! :D

I was thinking of the helmet sight that time! lol

Yes, there are certainly a couple of suitable ridged parts on the polaroid that could have been used for that part.

A few items...

First, (if I'm reading it properly) there may need to be a correction.

Shown in Stomper's photo of the pieces needed for the Smartgun headset, is this red piece on the left:

Image
On the right is the same piece while still on the parts tree.
(from the nearly identical "Macross VF-1D" model kit).

But... what I think you're really after is a piece located on a different parts tree:

Image
This I believe is the correct piece for use on the front of the
chin rest/block, of the Smartgunner headset.
(pic from the Tech manual on the left)

Stomper,
A couple questions for you.....

In your photo you show pieces both white and red.
Are these all from the same "Axoid" kit?
In your kit, do you have the smaller piece, shown just above?

A couple more questions, although I'm not sure anyone can answer them... yet.

I see that the "L pieces" in the Axoid kit are red, but the original pieces, on the helmet, appear to be white plastic under the chipped paint.

It would appear that only the REVELL "Axoid" kit has molded red parts. All the others (Including Revell, Imia & Bandai) have the pieces molded in white.

[eg:]

Image
Revell "Orbot"

Image
Bandai "VF" Valkyrie

Perhaps the prop makers used more than one kit (?)

OR, maybe the "Macross VF-1J" model kit (identical to the Axoid)
also has the same notched ear/ antena piece (?)

Next:
The Smartgun eye piece...

The pieces needed for the inside.
Does anyone have a clear shot of the inside of the original eye piece?

Harry ?
Maybe a photo like the one posted above, only with the eye piece flipped over (showing the inside) ?

And as far as the missing "H" piece on the outside of the eye piece...
It looks like those broke off early.
Here is a screen shot of Vasquez, with the piece already missing:

Image

Although here is a shot of Drake (in the locker room) with the piece still attached:
Image

And finally...
(To get back on topic) Here are some pics from the Tech manual
showing the missing piece on Spunkmeyers helmet sight:

Image

It looks to be a cylinder/barrel shape, with what looks like a few (3 ?) grooves slotted into it.

Sorry, best pics I could find.
(Maybe someone has better shots of the Tech manual pages)?

I totally second that, the red part is too long. That's what threw me when those parts were originally posted.
The white part in the second set is definatly the one...
