The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I'm starting to enjoy this demo, but I still have questions:

  • What exactly is "Transition" in the Alien gameplay? And what was wrong with the old "Press a button to stick to walls and then release it to enjoy the effects of gravity" controls they had in the earlier game? Maybe they could have made it press-to-toggle for the console versions, but I'm still not entirely sure what "Transition" does; sometimes it makes you change to another surface, sometimes it makes you drop to the floor, sometimes it just makes the hint text disappear and sometimes it does nothing at all....
  • While we're on the subject: Why are there so many walls that the Alien won't stick to however hard/often you mash the "Transition" button? Is is my misunderstanding of the mysterious "Transition", or is it a Teflon-coated USCM conspiracy to make being an Alien slightly annoying?
  • Why can't the Alien see in the dark when it has no eyes? Yes, it can see other creatures just fine, but a desk lamp taped to it's head or maybe an old-style oil lamp tied to it's tail would make navigating the map much easier! :)
  • Why do all the Marines look like a cross between Grant Mitchell and Harry Hill? :D
  • Why do you almost always respawn directly in the sights of another player but if you manage to run away you then have to search around for 5 minutes to find another soul?

Maybe these questions will be answered in the final version of the game. It's certainly a weird choice of demo, but it has Aliens in it so I've resolved to complain about it only in unnecessarily long and occasionally hypothetical questions from now on. Which, coming from me, is praise indeed.

I found it quite easy to use the Alien, then again if I were in your postision and had played all the previous AvPs, Id find that 'wtf' like material heh.

Feel free to add Pepperpete to the Steam List. Looking forward to playing/eating/slicing some of you.

I've found the connection issues are now over and I've had a ton of enjoyable matches. But I must say that the 360 version looks terrible compared to the fully maxed PC version (tried them both). It doesn't even look like the same game details wise. Also I found it basically impossible to get trophies on the 360 but I can rack them up on the PC. Maybe it's the Mouse/Keyboard combo as I don't have to fight the controller.

So far I'm enjoying the Marine completely. Many people have complained that it's tough to win as the Marine but I really can't agree. On the controller I had difficulty hitting the Aliens but using the Mouse I can smack those bugs around no problem. Most of the matches I've played have had Marines teaming up instead of shooting each other. And Aliens trying to wipe out the marines etc.

It's funny but the rough launch of the demo (and don't kid yourself...it was rough) seems to have weeded out the MW2 twitch weenies (sorry if that offends. :P) and left behind people who want to play like it's supposed to be played. Death-match was a terrible choice for the demo but it's giving me brief glimpses of just how great this game is going to be in the single player. The fact there will be 7 different types of multiplayer games is icing on the cake. Infestation is going to be the gamestyle I live on though (one person starts as an Alien, when he kills a marine that next person becomes an Alien and so on until it's last Marine standing).

But I have to stress this...the PC version looks a billion times better than the 360 version when it's maxed out details wise. If your system is a bit older then alot of the special effects probably aren't showing up properly.

My only complaint is the Smartgun noise. WTH where they thinking??? Everything else sounds spot on. Especially the motion tracker.

That's true of most PC games in the last couple of years though, so no surprise there. :)

Not sure if these were posted before, but these are the PC system specifications

Minimum Requirements
Windows 7/ XP/Vista
3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4/Athlon 64 3000+ or equivalent processor
1 GB System RAM (XP)/ 2 GB System RAM (Vista)
DirectX 9.0c compliant video card with 128 MB RAM (NVIDIA 6600 or better, ATI X1600 or better)

Recommended Requirements
Windows 7/ XP/Vista
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 or equivalent processor
2 GB System RAM
DirectX 9.0c compliant video card with 512 MB RAM (NVIDIA 8800 series, ATI HD2900 PRO or better)

I have 512MB GeForce 7050....so I should be ok.....I think.
I'm leaning towards getting this for PC so I can play online without having to get XBOX Live.
I'm downloading the demo now so time will tell!!

if someone was really good at the game already, they were playing the marines. one guy got 25 kills! the combo of shotgun and melee wiped any chance i had at getting him. after that i switched to the marine and had quite a bit of success.

i agree, but supposedly all the weapons are "updated" version. like the pulse rifles in this game are M4A2's and hold 99 rounds instead of 95. just small differences.

The Pulse Rifles in Aliens could hold 99 rounds, but they held less because of the same reason marines preferred to cycle the first Smartgun round - they had trouble with jamming.

I would take the recommended with a grain of salt. The true recommended is a DX11 capable video card like the ATI 5770 and 5850 (the 5770 is truly cheap right now at around 150 bucks). The reason for this is an absolutely massive detail increase and framerate increase. It's going to be totally jawdropping. Check out the vid below. In fact AVP has been built from the ground up to take advantage of the new tech. Unfortunately the 360 will see none of this and has to run at a majorly decreased detail level and resolution level (360 version runs in DX9.1 and the PC version will run in DX11 although the demo just supports 9.1 right now). I love my 360 but this game screams to be played properly in all it's glory. I think the guys playin the 360 version would be shocked to see it on PC and just how different the quality is.

I doubt many people would be shocked - we know the 360 is 6 year old hardware that was built down to the price. But eyecandy isn't why most people own consoles.

This is my reason for having a console: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7577

Ohh, and SecuROM ;) (and yes, I know the 360 is one big box of DRM but it's not insidious ...)

lol, dont be tempted by the shiney lure of graphics for the PC! As I can garentee, put in a 360 game it'll start up no problems, give the PC a game and it has to update this, update that, blue screen of death, so many hotkeys more than you can shake a stick at, and not only that theres more lag! Yippee!!

I totally agree about ease of use. 360 for the win in that department. :)

Yeah, no kidding!!
I just got online with it, with texture and detail down to a minimum I could still barely move...it was like a flip book in extra slow motion.

I'm running:
Intel Core 2 Quad Core (2.4Ghz)
4GB RAM
512MB GeForce 7050

Looks like XBOX and no multiplayer for me!!
But the spawn sites I saw looked nice :)

Having said all that ....

I have exclusive use of an 8-core HP DL380G6 with 24Gb of RAM at work. Anyone know of any modern gfx cards that would fit in the PCIe slots on a server (and not cook it up)? ;)

Hmm, OK. IMO that looks pretty average for a PC game at max settings. Lets hope the final game does have support for DX10/11 cleverness.

When you load the demo it states that this does not represent the final product and that the final product will utilize better technology.

OK, XBOX will run as is, but I won't have online play.
PC....I just need a new video card and can play online as is...hmmmmm....plus Harry just created the group so.....I think I will stick with PC and find a card that will run.

Any ideas?

I'm seeing NVidia 8800 for $75+ on eBay :(

My Steam account name is 'CplTony'
Thanks Harry :)

You existing card sounds "sufficient", so I wonder if there isn't another issue going on that would make it slow with ANY gfx card? I'm not really up on PC gaming since 3dfx though so maybe someone else can comment?

I'll check the drivers and the usual stuff...but lowering the texture under 'options' did little to nothing.
I have created a custom profile under the nVidia control panel for just AvP and made sure everything tech' wise was turned on.

Thanks guys,

I currently can't see where I invite players to the alienslegacy group, anyone know? Also for some reason I can't add friends, this may be because I only have the AvP demo registered on STEAM - I don't have any other games that use it. Try inviting me if you can: HHACA.

Just tried adding you Harry

Went into the steam icon on my bottom toolbar, right clicked, clicked on Community in the menu and then clicked on the 'friends' icon and added you.

Says you're offline at the mo :?
