The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

 Looks like I'll have to. One day I will buy a milling/lathe machine, and that would sure save me a lot of grief. If I had one at home, it would be done by now.
I think my next SG costume will be a winter themed one. Baby steps... baby steps

Yesterday, I went to the post office and picked up my headset that DATA shipped to me. Another shout out to DATA for his help. :delta:
I couldn't believe my luck, finding this headset, and on top of that, I only paid $40 CAN for it!
I will be making detailed plans of the HM560 within the month or so. Anybody who wants a copy, I will be more than happy to e-mail them to you (once they are finished)!
More details to come... Thanks fer lookin'!

I KNOW DUDE! I still can't believe it! I've been crappin' rainbows all day!
Slowly but surely, it will all come together. Sadly, I don't think my wife and I will be making it out to San Diego next year. $$$$ - NEED MORE!
Besides, I don't think I would be able to get the animal killer across the border. When I drove longhaul, no problemo, but it has been a few years since I have been back so I don't know HOW I would be able to get it on the plane.
They should have a special repro-weapon license for collectors damnit! I don't know... It just doesn't make sense. I'm not sure how it works because I have only been to in-town shows and down in Calgary, which is a little over 3 hours south of Edmonton, which is WAY better than here in the city.
Anybody ever problems getting the ol' M56A2 on the plane?

Unfortunately, I have no idea about transporting something like that back and forth across the border :( I know in the states it's usually no problem if the airline allows real arms in locked and checked luggage, but it's been quite a while since I looked at that :P When I went out to D*Con I just shipped the artillery in a trunk to the hotel :)

AFAIK, all you'd need to do is declare it at the counter, let them know you're transporting a realistic looking sci fi prop, and ask to be present while they inspect it so you can answer any questions they might have.

To be honest, I'd be more concerned with gear getting damaged in transit.

Thanks guys! That makes me feel a little better. Hopefully one day I'll luck out and run into a customs agent that is a HUGE Aliens fan! I will, of course, protect my HM560 to the death!
Danka Jesse and Sean, for checking out this posting.

I know... I know  I AM a S.O.B! The seller was NOT that thrilled that it sold for so little, and also the fact that I was the only person who bid on it. I just couldn't believe my luck.
Odd thing is I had finally got together all the pieces I needed to build a headset, when I decided to throw caution to the wind and try ebay AGAIN. Now... If only I could get some winning lottery numbers with that same luck!

Well, gotta hit the road again, back to work...

Expensive, but might work in a headset or whatever else.

Today, I am one small step closer to a finished costume. Received my 3A knock-off steadicam vest in the mail today. I will have to do some minor alterations, but I should have it looking close to an actual 3A vest. Having the vest in hand will make building the arm a lot easier now... One headache down... Next.

:D
Thanks Jesse, I quite like it! Like I mentioned above, I will have to modify the padding and back supports from the photo's of your vest you posted Jesse. I think instead of metal, I might go with thick leather and a thin sheet of metal to support the shoulder lamp, as well as installing the quick-release cable... But, I'm still thinkin'... still.... thinkin'
The vest is well made for the most part. It's perfect for the smart gun, but as for film work, I'm not sure how well it would hold up!?! I'm really happy it came with the socket block, which will more than solve the problem with me machining the arm bracket. I asked the machinists at work how much they would charge to machine the parts from the socket block plans I have, and they figured around $1000 for the whole kitten-kaboodle. Nuts to that I says!
Thanks fer lookin'... More photo's to come.

Today, I started on the male end of the socket block that is attached to the stabilizer arm. I still have some measurements to go, and the rest of the profiles. When that's done, it's time for machining.

Thanks fer the interest marines! Enjoy :delta:

Ooo....good luck with that :) Don't know as I'd want to retro-fit something like that, but more power to ya'!!! If you need any further pics or other info, lemme' know.

(hmmm....that's weird, I didn't get an e-mail update on this thread....I'd realized I hadn't checked the board in *several* days and found this thread had been updated....)

It's been a crappy couple of months, but I finally got back into the swing of things... I just finished a rough 1:1 mock-up of the stabilizer arm (minus the vest block and other pieces), to get the basic size and shape of what the finished arm will look like.
It's not looking good for our next year D-Con trip, so I will SLOWLY be working on my costume over the next year or so. We have been financially been bitch slapped, so things suck major right now.

More updates to eventually come, hope you like the pics.

Small update... My buddy is planning on buying a milling machine, so hopefully I can get this damn arm finished and photographed. The long cold winter months here in Alberta will provide the perfect excuse to finish it.

So, to quote Tarim-rex up at the top of the page... you're gonna make copies, right?

LOL... Yes, eventually I will make copies! :D

The major delay is the lack of a milling & lathe machine and the usual.... $$$$. Only having access to the one at work is a real pain because it's not always available, and set-up time can be a real bitch. But, there is a good chance my buddy will buy one, then there is no problem in building several sets. But, that's in limbo as well.

I will have updates soon... I promise!

Thanks for the interest marines!

I feel your pain, man. The biggest single expense in building my arm was getting machining done... and that was just getting bearing holes cut by machine so they'd line up perfectly!

But yes, I meant if your friend does get the lathe. You might even be able to recoup some or all of your development costs, 'cause I'm sure there'd be interest.

Hooray.... Update time.

So far, I have one wrist joint done, and more to come. 2nd one is almost done. 6061 Aluminum was used for these parts (same type used on aluminum wheel rims).

It will look much better after getting all the wrist joints blasted (plastic or glass sandblasting), to give it a nice surface texture, then finish it off with a coat of black Krylon dull aluminum spray paint except for one of the wrist joints (just gotta stay as close to SA as possible don't ya know :D  ). Then the next fun part will be countersinking the bearings. and I will be a little closer to getting this damn thing finished.
I already have the trunnion covers ready to go (simple 1" x 1/8" thick round aluminum disc's), that I will use to cover the pivot points on the wrist joints, for the bones (if that makes any sense!?!).

More pics to come (and video of the arm doing what it's made for... M56 mayhem! :D ) marines! Thanks fer lookin' :D
