The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

The foam is located:

Helmet lobster plates
All Shoulder parts (back to front piece, bells, and flaps)
back flap (bottom plate that hangs)
Knees

That about covers it.

Just by the naked eye .. Matt's find looks thicker and of course is a darker color. But it's probably close to the stuff like on Steve R's TE armour (but not the SU material). If it's thicker then it might have to shaved first to get the right look once glued to the back of armour parts.

Over the years, I've found that there are two "off the shelf" alternatives to the original padding, that keep rising to the surface.

The first is the Dutch Military sleeping roll
(described in this thread)

I also believe it was mentioned here (back in 2006) that Mr. English spoke of the original armor padding, during the "Alien Encounter" held at the Leicester Space Museum.

He stated that the original armor padding was made from a foam bed mat.
(Another good reason to lean toward the Dutch roll)

I believe that after it is split in half, the dutch military sleeping mat is the correct thickness.... Although the squares are a few mm. too large.

From what I understand, the original measurments are:

Squares - (6.35mm)
Thickness - (7.94mm)

Sleeping roll:

Squares - (10mm)
Thickness - (16.5mm)

A few links I've collected for finding the Dutch sleeping mat.
(Although I have not checked them in quite a while)

http://www.exarmy.co.uk
[Product Code: K28B]

http://www.genuinearmysurplus.co.uk
[Dutch Roll Mat]

http://www.asmc.de
[Product number: 32732]

* Although not quite as accurate, the second item that might make a decent alternative is a cross pattern Yoga mat.
(They have also been mentioned here in the past)

The "Yoga Essentials Mat"

Available from:
www.gaiam.com
...Seems to be a good candidate.

The color(s) to choose are the dark green, called "Leaf",
or the lighter green, called "Fern".

Another advantage of the Essentials Mat, is that they are
readily available and sold in many Taget® Stores.

I'm thinking these EVA foam mats maybe the newer generation
mat.

From Harry's pict, the original looks to PE foam.

EVA foam is actually better than PE foam, so I'm good with the
find.

Actually,

Calipered the squares, and they are around 6mm.

So petty close to original with slit in half.

I'll update the first post.

This thread has been dormant for a while. And so have I.

Great find on the mats!

As was pointed out in the thread, when making USCM armor for clients, Terry uses whatever is available for the padding, as long as it looks reasonably similar to the original. On my set, he used two different types of material: inside the helmet lobster plates he used padding with a 4mm grid (a bit smaller than the original), and inside the upper body armor (all shoulder parts and back flap) he used what appears to be some sort of reflective silver insulation material, painted to an approximation of Brown Bess. The "poleyn" or kneecap armor is unpadded.

Like many of you, I'm interested in upgrading the padding in my armor.

What became of the group buy?

Does anyone happen to have enough extra Dutch sleeping mat material to do a complete set of armor (in the areas that were padded on the screen-used originals)? If so, I would love to work out a purchase from you.

Ironically, I grew up in Portland. Now I live in Tokyo... far, far away from the Dutch sleeping mats.

Sadly the place where Matt found them sold out rather quick...When I called him for a second order, he asked me why all these guys were suddenly interested in "all these mats we've had laying around for awhile"...I laughed and then explained.

Thanks for filling me in, Cpl Smith. The guy at the shop must have been puzzled about all those old Danish mats suddenly flying out the door. :)

From what I've seen, one mat should be enough to do two or three suits of USCM armor at the very least. I'm hoping some kind soul may be able to sell me some of his or her surplus.

I have two rolls, tried to look into a foam place that would slit

the pads for me. Not many place want to slit foam only.

Might have to set up a jig and cut them myself.

No problem offering other the extra padding.

I'm a bit swamped with other projects now.

That's great, Matt! Thanks for making the extra available!

I'm not in a rush and am happy to wait until your schedule clears a bit.

Will contact you via e-mail to discuss further.

Many thanks again! :D
