The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

@Nick:

That is very close isn't it?!

The bottom section of the grill could have been removed and the three lights added, or they may be tuning knobs under a panel.

@Harry: Doubt it'd be a volume control, as the diameter of the circle would be very large and they're usually a lot smaller in size.

Harry, what for? I think Nick-a-tron just identified it for you! :D

Or do you mean he might have some lying around?

Well the original plastic is orange, so doubt it's that actual model, but I guess we've found the make and range. :)

Looking online though, TVs back then (as now) are often made in the same factory and then rebadged by different companies, so you'd have the same TV but with different logos and such on them, with some having slghtly different finishes, like orange plastic.

Mike,

Sorry - I thought Nick had got close - I can't quite make out the bottom section of it in Nick's photo but, as has been mentioned at least we know the make now - and probably the model once we get a clearer photo.

Nice one Nick!

Steve I think the prop was painted red - it looks pretty chipped & scraped to me and you can see white underneath.

Harry

Here's a bit about that:

Matsui (company)
During the 1980s, many Matsui televisions were rebranded Ferguson sets made in the UK.

Anyone live near Ilford?

http://www.gumtree.com/london/19/24246519.html

The bottom of the grille area seems to have a line across it, suggesting a panel/lid. :)

woah! thats looking promising! would need a closer look to see for sure. im thinking too that the open bottom area is hidden by a panel on the actual tv's. ill glady pay the £5 if anyone wants to pick it up.

As I say, I definitely think we're looking at either a Ferguson or Matsui TV, just not those actual models. :)

Just a little tinkering - it's only rough, I'm not CSI  - shows that if Nick's TV was 16", the panel fits pretty much exactly.

Image

There is an area unaccounted for at the bottom, but that could simply have been sawn off to fit it into the handle surround. I like the idea that the three knobs were already underneath and covered by a panel, although on this evidence it's quite a big panel. Might it also have contained manual tuning wheels or something?

So who's looking for the handle?

This is rather interesting & a good prop piece to have in one`s collection too.

So what`s the plan, someone is going to make one then cast a few kits for us to buy`n`build???
I`d like one ;)

Jason, normal procedure is for everyone to get all excited about it for a few days, then get a bit stuck and lose interest. That's what usually happens, anyway.

In the mean time though, I've thrown together some markings for it:

Image

The little rectangle at the top right gave me trouble, but I think I can just about see what it says, so here's my idea of that:

Image

I've also done one 'cleaned up', because I think in the photo the lining tape has been moved, not necessarily on purpose. So, it's an option.

Image

Also of note: the part as shown in the photo does not conform to an 11x13 ratio. I know there could be distortion etc, but I think those dimensions must have been pretty rough. Doesn't matter though, as all we need is one known distance and we can scale off that.

Of course, there's always someone like Pulseriflefan who comes along and actually finds the prop and ruins our SOP.

Well I have my fingers crossed someone will pull this off & hopefully offer kits of it.

I`d like to say try my own hand, though I have had little luck finding parts to even have a crack at a Motion Tracker :(
Even if I had to ad hoc a few pieces here or there, still not found the main body :(

So I do hope somene does & will offer kits of this,as I`d like one :D

Well, I bought the TV.

Obviously I wanted to rip it apart straight away, but I'm holding back until tomorrow when I can take some photos to document the process. :)

I'd buy a kit of this piece if it was made!
Now I wish I'd driven the 5 miles down the road to the auction house and taken a few more pics. I do have the catalogue so I'll see if pics in there show anything better.

And I had 2 of those Ferguson TV's in the late 80s, I'd say it's a very probably piece, but in 1985 they would have been kinda expensive to cut up. However a large amount of TVs would have been brought for the APC and other interior monitors and the cases would have been trashed.

Re the handle I was just looking at Google searching for aircraft parts and I came across these. They're parts from a drum brake.

Now I'm not saying this is what the lever is by any means, and obviously this one is a different design to what we might be looking for but it looks like it could be on the right track.

The second & third photos are from a motorcycle repair website and again show a close general shape. I've printed out the panel to the dimensions given in the auction text and the part we need has to be about 6.5" long.

Yes, because

Mike Rush wrote:

Yes, it has a pop-off panel, beneath which are three knobs (where the amber lights are). Beneath that are the tuning wheels.

And I will be taking it apart relatively slowly, just in case there are parts for anything else we need inside there. Although we do know for a fact that the production bought castings from a plastic factory, so they may never have had a complete TV at all.

I'm going to check the film to see if the back of this one turns up: by the lifts, next to Ripley's hospital bed, Ripley's vidphone, etc...

Top Man Mike.

Have a good build on this project :D As for parts being used on other prop pieces, well wouldn`t surprise me.

After all I bet it started with a complete TV they ripped apart before they went for diect components from the manufacturers.

Look forward to seeing this take shape under your skillfull build.
