The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

The SU pics revealed something I did not know...

The knob on the very rear of the flamethrower is a
air hose coupling.

Possibly the same make as that used on the stasis tubes (?)

Shawn's model of the flame unit is not a cast of an original!

Hmmm, I still believe it is. Here is a quote from his email from last year
Quote:
You know, I totally forgot about trying to install a few eyelets for the strap. I've included two pics of an actual flamer that will help with both the painting and the placement of those points. Also, that plug is the barell inside the emitter. It helps disguise the screw set in the bottom, too. The arrow demonstrates the best position for it as for some reason any other postion and it looks off-center. I've also added a few pics of the master that I painted up to help with the painting, too. They should really help..
I'd say go with the brown, I think it looks better...and you can see from the pics of the original that what they used, too.

Take a look at the pix Shawn sent me. They are all metal. Look closely at the larger trigger with trigger access pin and cotter pin professionally finished on the pistol grip. The fuel fitting on the rear looks authentic. Why is there rust on the weapon in both pix? The pilot light fuel line looks correct. There is two halves for the "flash hider" or pilot light housing as in this pic.

Image

There is even the correct metal tabs for the sling attachments.
Quote:
The most obvious are the shape of the pilot flame housing and the bottom of the tank.

Piece the two halves together Stefan & you have a pilot light housing. The bottom of the tank seems correct to me. I will admit he has cast his initials on my first bottle (underneath) but not on the second. All in all, I believe his product is cast from an original.

OK OK
This thought just crossed my mind. Maybe he got pix from an original (hence the cloth tape measure) and built up his own mold & uses that. What do you think, Marines?

I've seen an original flame thrower close up and I own one of Shawn's flamers too. It's definitely not cast from an original, but it's VERY close in terms of accuracy.

Ok Harry, I am now a believer. Still, I wonder how Shawn made his mold. I've since sent him an email to shed some light on this. I'll post the results when I get his reply.

Mike.

Hey guys. Yes, my version is scratchbuilt, and could not have been made possible without Harry's valuable input.

Also, I feel the need to clarify that it certainly was not my intention to imply any kind of ownership to the screen-used piece seen in the photo I sent Mike to better demonstrate the placement of the sling eyelets. It was simply the best visual reference I had on hand.

If memory serves that photo (along with a few others) were at one time posted up on the old board years after I had made the kit. And for the record I'm no longer offering the flamer, though I have considered attempting a final (and much more accurate) accurate version.

Nice one Shawn, let us know if you decide to go ahead with the final version flamer; I'm sure you'd get a healthy order book from us here! :)

Thanks for the clarification Shawn. Are you able to post the other pix of the screen used flame unit? We would all love it! 8)

Maybe you should start an interest thread (or just hijack this one!)

I for one would definately be interested in a accurate flamer.

I've always wanted to strap a flamer and PR together with gaffer tape... with a locater slapped on top for good measure. :)

Here is a photo of the resin flamer kit I got from ebay about 2 years ago .

It appears reasonably screen accurate from what I can tell - - -

I really like the fact that the front grip is HOLLOW ! and the barrel is visible inside of it ! :)

I plan to put a miniture water pump in the receiver, microswitch inside the 'trigger', and the fuel bottle will
contain water, with a suction line for the mini-pump, and a nozzle inside the muzzle! Battery pack will have
to be hidden in my uniform, with a wire coming out my sleeve with a quick disconnet plug !

This way I can have a "airsoft" flamer ! Or would that be "watersoft" ? ?? :O

Oddly I was thinking about this the other day!

If you were to find a UV flourescent dye to add to your water and fit a UV lightsource in the Flamers Pilot Light and an atomiser nozzle then you should get a pretty realistic looking flamethrower effect without making a Section 5 Firearms violation!

I was looking around on ebay motors and found a inexpensive and compact windshield washer pump with IN & OUT nipples, so you can run a suction line down to the bottle. They look very compact, and sealed. :)
fits BMW E36, 318, 323, 325, 328, M3 & 1541 if you wanted to search for it on ebay motors :)
Going to get one and run it on 14.4 volts, and see how far I can get it to squirt !!! :)

The washer pump arrived in today's mail ! :)

so tomorrow I will begin testing it on 12 volts, and then on 14.4 volts !!

and see if we get any range !! :)
