I don't think we get to see that. Hicks only uses it twice, the first time we see it through a helmet cam, but the picture is too grainy to see details. The second is in the APC and I think Hicks already had it chambered because he didn't rack it before shooting the bug.

And as for Gormans rounds bouncing off the alien in the air ducts, I figured that was because there was added thickness to their forehead carapice.
