The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Just theorizing, maybe they're not explosives, but maybe electroshock stun rounds? They remind me of a battery. Silver, red, black. The metal hex end could be a "contact". It would fit since they had a dog catcher's pole and crate with them. They didn't want to kill the xeno, but capture it.

The assembly sequence is odd in some places:
- The stock is mounted in figure 14 as one of the last parts. I wonder how they fix it to the rifle, as the common method with 4 screws in the Thompson rear sight holes won't work.
- Figures 9 and 10 are also strange. For this to work you first have to inset the barrel into the front triangle and then push the front grip holder (with the attached launcher) into the cutout of the Thompson. Then (figure 11) you screw the barrel into the receiver which also locks the front grip holder in place.

Cheers
Stefan

They are just machined 12 Gauge snap caps again aren’t they? It does look like they are the ALIEN 3 Grenades though… how odd.

On my Pulse Rifle I do it the same way.. (Figure 9-10).
First put the front grip holder with the barrel vent and Spas Cage on the Thompson,
than screw the barrel in to fix the holder in place, then screw the barrel extension
in the barrel through the barrel holder on the Triangel..

Corp Hicks - I agree with that sequence if you have the barrel extension removed. In figure 10 however, it looks like the barrel extension is still in place.

Judging from those pictures I'd say the barrel extension is permanently fixed to the barrel on this gun as it would be almost impossible to unscrew the barrel without the extension coming loose first.
And once the barrel extension is gone, there is no way to get a good grip on the barrel to unscrew it as the barrel vent is in the way.

Just a quick note for those unfamiliar with the real steel M1A1:
On the real steel Thompsons the front grip holder has pin on the rear end that will fix the holder in place once the barrel is screwed into the receiver. Thus ther's no way to remove the front grip holder without removing the barrel first.
On (airsoft) replica Thompsons there are usually one or two separate screws from below or the rear to hold the front grip holder in place. Thus you can easily remove the front grip from the receiver without removing the barrel first.

Cheers
Stefan

Yes, if the barrel extension is still on the barrel, there is no way u can screw the barrel at the upper receiver with the barrel vent in place...

This gives me an idea/hope!

Years ago, this image was posted on the boards and I think at the time it was said that it came from a Japanese magazine. Do you guys know which magazine and if there are any more images?

It's from "The Official Movie Book, Japanese Version'' (often dubbed the 'Jap Mag' back in the day) published by Tsuguhiko Kadokawa.

There are no similar images in it unfortunately.

Would love to see those pages, but "Ultra Rare" in the file name tells me I won't be any time soon

Is that a shot of the old school computer games used in the colony interior, Moosh?

I don't know if it was the original focus of the image in the magazine or whoever uploaded it here originally. (The arcade games are "Firefox F7"s).

This image rocked my world a few years ago when I set out to identify all the panels on the Medlab desk. It really helped and I'm very curious to see if there are other set photos that may help me out in mapping and recreating the colony interior.

I also want to get a peek at the Set Photography book and the Making Of Aliens book to see if there's anything new I haven't seen yet.

Yes there’s a lot of lost detail. They really went to town on the interior, the majority of which we only only get fleeting glimpses of… it’s a whole new world of detail

Tacblue is there any news on these two points? I'd love to know what was written, and also to see the images in better detail of course.

Apologies, it kind of fell on my back burner for a bit. I will try to get both done over the coming weekend. On the plus side, after seeing that Alien 2 Japanese book you posted, I ordered one from Japan and it arrived yesterday. Found it quite interesting, a fair few shots I'd never seen before.
Anyway, will do my best to get to it, though being a flat scanner I'm not sure how how great some of the images will be. I'll try and get them as flat and neat as I can. Does anyone know the max size of Pic that can be posted?

You're my hero! :delta:

I'd love to see that other magazine where the Medlab photo came from, and any other photos it has!

Ok, translation done. Learned an interesting point or two. English might be a little off, but I was going for a fairly direct translation.

6. Disassembled block of M41A. You can see the Thompson is intact as is. In the handguard is a shotgun.

7. Let's reassemble the M41A that has been disassembled. Richard is the only one who can disassemble and reassemble.

8. First, let's take out the main frame. It's just a sheet metal frame.

9. Turn the frame upside down and insert the grenade launcher unit from the front.

10. Next, insert the Thompson receiver from the rear, and insert the Thompson barrel from the front.

11. Turn the inserted barrel to secure it to the receiver.

12. After the barrel is secured, slide grip part of Thompson in from behind.

13. Next, insert barrel of shotgun which will be the grenade launcher from the front and turn it to secure it in place.

14. Insert stock from rear. There doesn't appear to be any particular stopper when extended or retracted.

15. Looking from the rear bottom, you can clearly see that the Thompson is inside the sheet metal frame.

16. Loading the grenade launcher. It's an aluminum blank using regular #12 shotgun shells.

17. There was a lightweight M41A among the gun racks lined up. The exterior is the same as the actual gun, but the interior is sponge.

So there ya go... Nothing groundbreaking, although it was interesting to find out that there was no actual way to lock the stock in place. That was news to me.
I got the scans to accompany the article done, and will try to post them tomorrow after resizing.

Moosh, I'll probably post pics of pictures I am not familiar with from that magazine, and if you want actual scans I can go back and do some. A lot of the images are ones we've seen over the years, but some were new to me. But that might just apply to me. In any case, I'll put up the ones I wasn't familiar with.

I could have sworn the guy in the blue T-shirt is Simon Atherton but if they're saying that then presumably it's Richard Hooper.

I thought it could be a mixup, but in the picture where he's holding the assembled rifle he's referred to as Richard also. I suppose it's always possible they got the names mixed up when they wrote the article, but I'm thinking that's a stretch...

Huh... Well, still posted in reverse of intended order, but at least they posted.

I may have overestimated the amount by which I resized them, but hopefully they will still be clear enough for everyone's purposes here.
