The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I prefer the Pulse Rifle of ALIENS / ALIEN 3 but I have to say that I am happy to see a Pulse Rifle with ugly modifications compared by seeing a completely new gun :D

Burner nails it. No, I don't like all the bells and whistles, but compared to the crap they used in A:R or the lazy choice of Prometheus I will gladly take this.

Agreed!

Now, I wonder if he'll keep the sound.

Now that is worth Tweeting him about. It would be so easy to overlook (*cough* Alien3 *cough*) but it wouldn't be hard at all to do right.

Looking at this in detail, it seems to be a scratch build (except perhaps for the Thompson). Look at the two rivets on the front lower part of the shroud; those aren't on any PR I've ever seen.

Still could be something Blomkamp had made for himself as a bit of fun, or a prototype of the new movie prop.I really hope it isn't a finalised movie design (though the WY, 'Caution' and other decals would suggest that it might be). In which case I pray they ditch the 20th century accessories.

Face it guys & gals...Every Film Director loves to pi$$ on the tree and make it their own. Considering the VERY bad direction this could have gone...(as much as I LOVE the original PR) it could have been much worse. --Ed

Would have been great if they did Cameron's original concept PR

In many respects there's little need to tinker with the overall detail of the weapon as the follow up is supposed to be after Aliens... No need to mess with the pump grip or anything else. I agree with Chef that there could be minor alterations to have some form of sight in the rail but we don't need it to look like someone has literally smeared it in glue and run through an airsoft accessories aisle...

It is reassuring to think that they'll be returning to the PR concept.

i love the new look. i just hope its not every weapon or maybe each rifle be its own kinda like what we do now. but i see where everyone is upset that they changed it. but yet again it could have been far worse. we could have had all new weapons and they blow over what we all know and luv.......

I completely agree. We weren't supposed to notice the WW2 sub-machine gun inside the PR (much less the ejecting cases), and now with HD film/digital, it's going to stick out a lot worse. If he wanted to mess with a classic, he should have gone back to the concept art, not thrown superglue and rails at it. Still, as I say, as long as we get WETA designed accessories on those rails, I can live with it.

I don't want to take a piss but how come American movies never settle for what is already cool. I mean why a new batmobile in each Batman movie. I know I will never see another Aliens movie but why all this desperation. Is it a plastic Bruckenheimer Hasbro complex?
If they didn’t have LAM’s and rails on the oldies why need it now. What?! do the APC now need an RPG bar cage too? Why go back to the 21st century. Oh wait!!!! Jesus I forgot… Soooo stupid of me. We need a new alien too…green, double head, four legs this time??

I think they should focus more on believable story, acting and plot then mess around what identify it as an -86 Aliens sequel. Do you know why the L.D. Mona Lisa portrait is timeless?? You can do a thousand modern interpretations but you shit ain't going to get close to the original, ever!

That would make way too much sense unfortunately. I've been asking myself that exact question for every franchise in recent years. Film makers get so lazy in sequels these days. Story is laid by the wayside for CGI effects and name brand actors. It's like they expect the story to write itself or be inconsequential with the current following. So you end up with Predators and Alien Rez, paper-thin characters who obviously are secondary to the action-not the story.
I'm just excited to see the USCM back in the genre at any rate.

It's called....... Merchandising!! I remember seeing The Dark Knight at the cinema with a friend and he commented that in the chase scene where the tumbler crashes and the "damage is catastrophic" and then the motorcycle is ejected, that it was really unnecessary to the scene and/or plot and he surmised it was just to be able to sell yet another toy....

scoff

Well, compare that to Batman Returns: exactly the same Batmobile as the first film, but that was the early nineties. Now there is a push to make each installment distinct. Look at Captain America's uniforms or (to a lesser extent) Iron Man's armour.

So what are our options as fans? Do we praise Blomkamp for keeping the PR while gently reminding him it was already perfect the first time around? Nothing is set in stone so maybe we can sway him...
