The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Interesting-

Anybody got a better screengrab?

Another funny/interesting thing is that if you do a Google Image Search for "gerber mk II" the 3rd image is this japanese Gerber clone from a prop rental site!

http://thespecialistsltd.com/gerber-mark-ii

https://www.google.com/search?q=gerber+ ... =961&dpr=1

It also looks like there are several Gerber Clones that use a similar cross guard design-

I'm starting to agree with Nickatron... I wonder what kind of sheath these came in? A rip off of the Gerber? I've no idea...

Just thinking about how all these props may have been acquired by the props department for the original film... The knives were made by a company called SCALEMEAD at the time and were available in a few clone guises i think... They've always been cheap... A company called BATTLE ORDERS based in Sussex sold them at the time I think... I wouldn't be surprised if they just got a job lot in from there... All conjecture of course...

I can't take screengrabs of the bluray, so this is literally a picture taken with my camera of my tv-

Honestly... I can't tell. It certainly looks like the knock off with the pointy tips on the guard, but I'm wondering if maybe the angle of the knife (it isn't exactly flat against the camera view) coupled with the darkeness (we can only make out the outline) is making a genuine Gerber appear like the knock off. :?

I think the pointy guard might be the correct model for Hudson!

That's the one I found which prompted the discussion... Expensive for a clone...

Yeah - Look at this - a list of all Gerber clones... And by the looks of it all but one type comes with the type of sheath used by Hudson.

Definitely a clone... Especially given the other variants of explorer knives carried by the cast...

theres an irony, all the guys who have gone out to find the 'right' model of mk 2 gerber and paid silly money for such, just to find out it aint even a real gerber! i'm kinda glad i went for a modern gerber, it was alot cheaper!
top job of observation there and it would fit that the knives are a job lot from explorer, keep up the good work!

I'm all but 100% convinced that this knock off is Hudson's "Gerber":

http://militarycarryknives.com/ExplorerMMIVKnife.jpg

Notice that the blade itself is not exactly "blackened" (subdued Gerbers are a lot blacker than this)...

A few years ago I made a big stink that Hudson's Gerber didn't have a truly black blade-

Image

There is definitely a "sheen" on the blade. So much so that the blade looks shiny in the last frame before Hudson says, "That wasn't funny man!"

Image

I think the knock off above fits this theory!

But here are a bunch more pics from the Bluray-

Image

Next one has the contrast turned up to show the outline:

Image
Image

Turned slightly-

There is some kind of circular indentation in the base of the blade (perhaps the knife maker logo), but I can't make out any detail.

Like I said- all but convinced! 8)

Kevin - Yes - I'm 100% convinced now... It's an explorer clone with a darkened (but not blackened) blade...

If you look at the images I've attached and compare them to your screen grabs with Bishop spinning the blade I've selected... The wording on each side of the blade at the hilt is consistent... Ok we can't actually read it... But in size and layout...

Yeah...its a gut punch on principle. In defense of myself, my bit about the 'right' Gerber took like 15 mins of figuring out based on 3 simple facts from the serial # chart (Attempting to type the results up took much longer than any research) and as for silly money, I feel like I got a great deal on mine and appreciate it for what it is. I am not as big of a knife enthusiast as some others that have posted here, but I don't regret my purchase. Its still a top notch item, even if not an "authentic Hudson" item, that I am happy to own.

In any case, I am linking this thread into the "ultimate sidearm" thread I had attempted to make.

As for the blade, I didn't know anyone still claimed it was black. I thought the concept of the "blued" blade was the ultra strong suspicion bordering on certainty that had been accepted by all. Whatever process for faded darkening of the knockoff blade was surely similar.

All in all...WOW. Man I missed a LOT when I took a week off from the forum! Heavy and just wow. Great stuff guys. Not great news for a guy that thought he had it nailed..., but still great detective work all around. Perhaps its based on mostly bitterness, but this does reinforce my already present feelings of "screw you Gerber with your ONE guy!!! Night Raiders for the win!!!".

I've got to be honest and say that in my book, how I rationalise it is that what Hudson carried was only supposed to be a cool looking knife prop... it probably didn't 'have' to be a Gerber... it just had to look 'Gucci' (sorry for use of that term) for the Bishop knife trick scene... And with instructions to 'go out and buy some knives' some member of the props department just went out and bought a load of cheap knives which looked the part and, for the most part, would all stay in their sheaths...

Having the real deal goes one better... Because it's quality... And in shape and design and heritage that knife IS a Gerber... Who wants to live in a world without Coca Cola?

A Gerber of the right design is always going to hold its value because its an iconic Gerber design... If I had one, I'd certainly be content that I had the 'Rolls Royce' version...

I know this thread is already pic heavy... But I thought I'd put in a bunch of photos of the knife we're now convinced Hudson carried...

The 21-042 Explorer MM-IV...

I bought this on EBay... There was a nice selection of images of it on the listing so I thought I should put it up for future reference...

Why is a find like this comes a mere two months after I broke down and bought a Gerber? :'(
