Sometimes I do and sometimes I dont. Being housemates with a postman means I can sometimes get away with it if he collects it while he's working. Fingers crossed.

Mine just arrived! The date on the back says 1983, the instructions are in Italian, and the packaging is mint.

Is it goofy that I almost don't want to open it??

I have pondered that myself! Mine isnt supposed to arrive till tomorrow, but the same thought did occur to me. I'll probably open it (because that was the point!) due the mod, and leave the packaging in the same place I have my 'hot toys' boxes and other rediculous things I *should* trash, but can't because they are part of the 'collectors item'! I'll def be surgical in the item removal.

So: black or BB/OD on this thing?

EDIT:

Check out the red tip showing on Hicks' belt tool!

(Thanks to Magnus for the picture). According to Willie Goldman's picture it looks like BB or OD for these (personal preference).

Frost, Hicks and Apone all carry them differently so I guess there's no one "right way" so I won't ask about that...

Got mine today also. Glad to see they are the real deal, and the package is in great shape. Looks like I didn't win a hair in mine. :(...:)

My two showed up today. The little yellow bullets actually shoot pretty far.

For screen accurate the forward arm is removed right?

correct-a-mundo.

Man, paint is going to be a pita for me to decide on myself. All out of my BB substitute. To order more and wait, or just paint em black or OD for now...

So I decided to add a bit of detail. I noticed the originals had a metal loop to help them stay closed, so I liberated one off my pop rivet gun. I then looped a small bit of velcro fastener through the first and second holes on the handle to keep the loop locked onto it.

I'm an olive drab kind of guy, so that's what I used with a bit of black and silver for weathering. Then I added some non-screen accurate water slide decals to give it a bit of personality. Since we don't even know what it's supposed to be I thought it would be fun to play around with it.

Thoughts?

Looks good. Funny, I was just sitting here trying to make the metal clip for mine. Your Idea seems to work great.

Mine didn't have any metal loop (however I bought mine about nine years ago, and it was the inaccurate "4 barrel" style... so my memory might be more than a bit hazy).

As for what the belt tool actually does... couple of theories:

1) It is a grenade. I believe someone (Sgt Tony?) asked a cast member (Cynthia Scott?) what the belt tool was for and they answered it being a grenade. However this doesn't really jive as the Marines already have several M series grenades attached to their webbing.

2) It is a remote detonator of some kind (much like the detonator of a Claymore mine- personally I think this fits best).

3) It is an Atropine Auto Injector to combat the effects of nerve gas.

Another possibility is that it is a charger for the Pulse Rifle seeing that a modified version of the belt tool was the Smartgun battery.

However despite the theories, no "official" explanation has been given as to what they are or do (Scapey... no "That's the beauty of it" line please   ). They were just "dressing" for the Marine kit.

I always assumed it was like a spare universal power source that could charge the welders, trackers etc

Interesting. I always just heard it called a belt tool, and figured it was some sort of hand held impact wrench tool.

I don't recall which specific continuity polaroid it was, but one of them had a hand written note under it that said "no phosphorous flares". I have theorized the photo note meant the "belt tools", but interesting word choice. So my thoughts:

-As Kev already said, they have plenty of grenades and are already explained/established. Cant be that.
-Several marines carry multiple tools. If it were an actual "tool" they would only need one (as they wouldnt get 'used up').
-If they were spare power supplies, they guys that used welders and motion trackers should have the most (Hicks and Hudson only had one each. Frost and Crowe carried the most yet had neither the tracker nor the welder).

This leads my own personal theory back to the polaroid that maybe they are flare guns. One-and-done disposable flare guns. If that was the case, they would have a unique purpose, and the carrying of multiples would be semi-justified. Just tossing it out there...

Instant EDIT: I have considered the flare note was meant for the kind of flare Ripley used to mark her path chasing Newt. But I still think my theory is plauseble.

Frost was carring a tracker. As they are working through med-lab he's 'spotting' for Drake before they run into Newt

The "no phosphorous flares" note was on Dietrich's polaroid.

Great theories!

For all we know they could be the grape jelly dispenser from the standard USCM Ration Pack, and Frost and Crowe both enjoy it the most.
