Rack numbers are a common thing to see on issued weapons during most of the 20th century, and even now.
I own 8 military rifle racks, and they're all numbered.

You could paint your favorite 2 or 3 digit number on your rifle.


Here's an M1917 in combat with an "armory number" or "rack number" on it:

the only gun i recall seeing grafitti on (other than the smart guns) was Hudson's PR. and it had the letter "D" on the magazine.

I'm not so sure that was actually gaffitti; might have been a way to identify the guns as being hero or stunt?
