The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Remember the large black bits on the main body were where the support guy's arms went through to the PL arms, you might want to cover them up with something, or even make some "arms" to go through them.

Not moved due to Christmas vacation and having no help to REALLY get it going.
However I've enlisted help of a buddy locally so I expect this to take off very soon.

It's been a very mild winter so far but we can do a lot of this inside (except the painting) so weather is not an issue.

I'm not sure. A friend used to work for a company that had a lot of these...really cool prop'y stuff.
All I can say is they're construction related...that's about it.

Ah cool, looks the part anyway.
Dare I say it actually looks more 'Caterpillar' than the one in the film!

Maybe even with a small screen on the control panel: Next-gen Motion tracker..... :)

Update on this which I'm sure you've all forgotten about.

The forks are cut and pretty huge and are being reinforced as they are very flimsy on their own.
A bit of bad news though....this will NOT be making it to DC2012 because we lost our transportation.

Normally we drive and room with a friend who has an awesome minivan (it's how we got 'Bosco' the dead colonist there in 2010) but she's not able to make it so we're just driving the small Dodge Caliber.

Hoping she'll return with us in 2013 though so we can bring this with us.
This gives us another year to complete it and more importantly another winter as its about 110 outside right now and my garage is NEVER cooler than it is outside.

Progress will continue!!

Once its built and ready to go I may look into sound effects.....I just want to get it built first though.
But that being said if we're going to have the light on top...we'll already have power so it won't be much else to add a sound board or even just a mini MP3 player and an amp.

Remember this?

I got about 2 hours in the garage before I had to stop for lunch but snapped a few things beforehand.
Now remember that the cardboard is just a basis in which to build the pieces off in foam so it looks crap for a reason but there is a method to the madness.

I finally got my hands on an alice pack frame which will be how the body section is attached to me. From that I was able to get a rough box done and start to shape the body.
Again it's just a basis and it looks crap for that reason ;)

Basic shell - Front
Image

Basic Shell - Back
Image

Body Shell - Contoured
Image
Image

The body is going to be the worst part because in theory everything has to attach to it (even though it won't physically) and the rear section sticks out to the point I'm concerned about it getting broken.

As far as the legs go, I'm thinking of using plywood for all the internal pieces and then the foam on the exterior.
The lower legs will get the most punishment moving around so the stronger we can make them the better.
Weight is not an issue so much there as my legs will be lifting and moving, they won't be hanging.

Any advise or tips you can offer please feel free to throw them out there.
The fall is here so the time to be out in the garage working on this is now :)

MDF Board / Masonite- it's available in different thicknesses, strong has a textured finish on one side and a smooth (brown) finish on the other. MUCH easier to paint than plywood. Painting plywood, trying to get rid of the wood grain will give you all sorts of headaches bro.

Use this stuff- it's MUCH, MUCH Better than plywood.

Wear a mask when working with MDF, the dust is carsenagenic (I.e, can give you cancer)
