The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Okay, mine was only the standard version but that'll do me! Menus are nice, looks like a ton more pics/polaroids to pour through, extras to watch and of course 4 films! (if you're gonna make it a marathon you may as well stick it out) :P

Plus Iron man 2 came as well - not enough hours in the day - maybe if I skip food................liquid lunch me thinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only half way through watching Aliens, but here's my initial obervations;

Haven't had a chance to watch anything except for half of Aliens so far, but here's a few quick observations;

Low light/contrast areas show more film grain, but not to the detriment of visuals.
Normal/high contrast images are almost perfectly sharp, but without the poorly done DNR of other film series (recent Predator transfer being a good(bad) example).

Certain things, such as the Narcissus, Sulaco and Gateway Station look so good (possibly with added remastering/minor DNR) that they look almost 3D.

The helmet cam shots look great, with the APC viewpoint shots showing an 'overlay' to give the impression we're watching small LCD monitors. Dunno if that's how they looked in the cinema though, so can't say for certain if it's a recent touch up job or not. :)

The colour intensity seems to have been tweaked throughout the film, with examples being Hudson's armour camo showing the true colours of the paint, with the sparks from the thermal lance (cutting through the Narcissus door frame at the start) being much warmer orangey tones.

Probably have more to say after a few watches of the whole six disc set. 8)

I was very impressed with the internal lighting in the egg, as it's really bright.
The actual egg/Xeno is just made of model kit type plastic, no resin or harder materials, so I wouldn't want to drop it. :P

Re. the sound; can't really comment, as I only have the stereo speakers in the TV to go by, but there's more 'punch' to the sound than on the DVD version. 8)

Any news on Bishop's hole? ... ;)

There was what looked like a really bad photoshop going around, suggesting that they had fixed the visible "body out of the hole" gag near the end when Bishop grabs Newt. The still made it look so badly done that it had to be done by a forum wind-up merchant.

So, is it fixed, and if so does it look ok in motion?

I think they edited the scene to remove it, but I was eating pizza at the time, so might have missed it. Will try again tomorrow. :)

They've digitally removed the hole in the floor. But it's expertly done and you can't see where it's been painted in. Nice work.

Yup, looked again this morning and have uploaded the scene here:

It's at about 47 seconds in. :)

Hmm.

Is the original 1986 version of the film available anywhere on the discs?

That was from the 'Theatrical Version' on the disc. :)

I haven't watched the SE yet, but I'm guessing they've corrected it on both.

What, so they've been pissing about with the film and they call it the THEATRICAL version? Even Lucas doesn't do that, does he?

F#ck you, Fox. :(

Seriously, pissed off now. Recolouring it such that, apparently, it looks a different colour to how it looks when a print is projected in a cinema is bad enough but now they're "fixing" stuff?

I agree that the touch up should have been exclusive to the special edition.
And yes, the original theatrical version of Star Wars differs in many respects to what Lucas now calls the theatrical version. I read an article with the DoP from star wars who claims the colour timing in the revised theatrical edition gives a very different feel to the film than the original release and he didn't care for it at all.

Hey, can't wait for the new colorised theatrical edition of King Kong '33! ;-)

I personally don't think the colouring is overdone, just very slightly more saturated in certain scenes/areas when compared to the DVD version.

It's been a while since I saw it at the cinema, so maybe this HD print is how it looked back then? :wink: 8)

Other 'errors' are still in the film, including the girder inside the Queen, the 'aerials' on the Powerloader, etc., so maybe Jim was just embarrassed about the Bishop hole? :)

I think it's just the Bishop hole as Steve says. The colour restoration is fantastic and not to be confused with a new colour grade or any kind of re-colouring.. It's just been restored to it's best. And not a Star Wars jobbie like the one I mentioned before, thank goodness. I can't imagine anyone not liking what they see when they finally get their eyes on it (including Abe!) :-D
The Alien and Aliens transfers really are incredibly impressive.

I'm no film tech expert but I have to agree with ADC, I've watched Alien and Aliens and gone are the dissappointing grainy scenes which always looked like I was watching through a net curtain! Not exactly HD quality as you'd get with digital cameras straight onto Bluray - but it'll do me - loving it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
