The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

DSB, Birdie already ID'd that part on page 4. Good to have confirmation from more than one person though. :)

D'oh, sorry Harry, everyone. I thought I was keeping up with this thread, but looks like a few replies slipped past me.

Definitely something like this:

However, we still need to find the correct one...

Cheers,
Stefan

That could be difficult! I've been in electronics now for 13 years and I don't think I've really ever seen two 1/8th inch jacks the same.

This is one of those parts that I think will be a "close enough" situation.

Don't say that!

For the Ghostbusters trap pedal we needed relais that had the same version number than the current production model but looked totaly differend. It took some time but we finally found them as well as a lot of other vintage electronics stuff.

Cheers,
Stefan

I've been pulling apart a bunch of old cassette walkmans (walkmen?) that I still have from the eighties, but the screw ring around the jack-in suggests to me a Tandy/Radioshack part, rather than something that was incorporated into a product like a walkman.

WDI, do you know how long the 1/8 jack has been around, and with what applications?

I have a lot of old audio and musical equipment from that era, and only the new fangled portable tape players seem to have that jack, I/4 was the standard.

1/4" phone jack has always been the mainstay whether it was in "A Gauge" or "B Gauge" ("GPO").

I'm not sure how long the 1/8" jack has been in use I'm afraid.
During the Aliens era it was mostly used in audio equipment. Namely small headphones and microphones, but there were probably a few proprietary applications as well.
These days it's used all over the place. Power, data, audio, video... you name it.

I hate to sound like the misery guts of the group but I'm not holding out much hope of finding the actual jack that was used.
That said, they were all pretty similar. Virtually any older type that is a complete "box" like that one will look right in place as part of the helmet greeblies.

The type generally found in personal stereo's were mounted directly to the PCB and didn't have mounting nuts like that one has.
This would have been some form of panel mount jack.
It may have had pins - to solder directly the the PCB, or it may have had solder tags.

Wel,I'm using one like Stefan pictured. I'm not as exact as some of you guys regarding the accuracy thing. Very close is better for me than waiting for years for a couple of parts to be ID'ed.

I did that with the Alien tracker, and I haven't done a thing on the build in two years.

Good work Herr mm. :)

Now all we need to know is do the original helmets have mono or stereo sockets on them?

What do you mean who gives a ****?!? ;)

That's kind of what I mean - they are all fairly similiar; and there are so many available from different suppliers. It will be difficult to find the actual model used.
But my point was that there are so many that would work regardless whether they are the actual type.

WDI,
is there anything that makes you think this is not the right model?

Harry,
I think that's something Giò might be able to answer.

Cheers,
Stefan

Difficult to say...
Only that I've seen so many and there are dozens of different units by different manufacturers that look all very much like that.
I think it's just the odds of actually finding the exact same one they used...

The only thing that is slightly different between those pictured and the one we see on the helmet is the nut. To be totaly realistic I think any of the ones you found would be perfectly suitable and are what I would use.

This is a great thread guys , fascinating to see the updates on it. Reminds me of the pump widget one from before.

With that in mind ,and knowing Bugstomper and others then no line will be drawn under any of this until every last tiny bit has been identified and accounted for :)

If it's 99% accurate, then it aint accurate springs to mind

Birdie,

you can try to get it here:

Image

http://www.bitsbox.co.uk/connects.html

And while you are on it - would you mind getting me one too?

Giò,
can you confirm that this is a 3.5mm connector (just measure the diameter of the hole)? It seems to be available as a 2.5mm version too.

Cheers,
Stefan

I emailed Toby electronics, and it turns out they have stock of non-Rohs compliant plugs, which look identical, probably more accurate for the eighties :)

Clarification on the jack size from Gio would definiteley be helpful.

We don't really need lead-free sockets for our props, do we?

I had some thoughts about the green hoses and I think there are several places to look for these:
- airbrush supplies (the most obvious thing for a prop shop to get these):
Image

- motorcycle brake hoses (motorcycleparts were used on the smartgun)

- plumbing (sp?) supplies (I have seen similar hoses used on flow heaters)

Cheers,
Stefan

Are the lines cloth braid covered? It looks like a little fraying is going on in the pics.

I'm 99% sure I know what those hoses are, but I'm going to try and get photographic evidence before I make a fool of myself here.

They're ptetty close to the braided tube I have on a motorcycle footpump.

Motorcycle brake cable outers are plastic coated and too narrow, but bear a close resemblance to the Hama release cabes, as I pointed out early in the thread.
