The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Those pics are great thanks. Much appreciated.

Could you shed any light on how the green plastic cables are attached to the helmet. It looks like on that side they did not cut a complete circle out but I am curious how they got the channel that the cables are sat in like that. Did they cut a section out of the hemet above the main ear cup and then fix in something to give it that depth or someother means.

If that doesn't make sense then I'll try and reword it. I'm not very good at explaining myself unfortunately LOL

Cheers

Darren

Giò,

thanks a lot for these pictures! It's a real treasure you brought us here and to me it's the most exciting stuff I've seen in a long time! :D
Did I get that correctly and you have both the original helmets? Waoh!
Could you take a few pictures of the sight unit on Spunkmeyer's helmet?

Cheers,
Stefan

The end pieces of the release cables seem to be from this kit (Arm & Intake):

Gio, you are a star :)

Fantastic pics again. Can you tell us if the pieces I've coloured are metal or plastic? I'm wondering if these are robot parts that have yet to be identified, or something else.

Thanks again,

Simon

Giò I can't thank you enough for these photos! The willingness of our members to share information and reference is what keeps this forum, and the Alien Saga fan base, alive.

For me one of the thrills of being an enthusiast is knowing that one day something we've never seen before will turn up, and this is no exception.

Here's hoping 2008 is a prop-reference filled year! :)

To follow up on Birdie's last post the part I've shaded here looks like a part from a model motorcycle engine to me, anyone else feel the same way?

Harry

Hi Stefan,
...thanks :)
Yes, I was the lucky winner of the PIH Auctions...!
Ok, I'll do it tomorrow ...I need of a correct light....
Please consider that both helmets need of a complete restoration and I need of one of those green cables... so if you will can identify, exactly, the provenience ... it will be perfect!

Darren, those pieces are in plastic! .... everything is in plastic!

Thanks Harry!
I think ... until now, I never spoke with you directly ... but time ago you spoke with my girlfriend for those italian translations you needed :)! ... do you remember??!!

Yes, this is a wonderful forum & community!
...May be I can help with other “thing” too... :)!

Bye
Giò

The original scratch-built masters may have been metal and/or plastic, but I'm pretty sure that what we're looking at here is a casting and so that won't really help you. Chances are they made moulds and did several copies of everything.

For what it's worth, they do look as if they were made by the same talented individual/s who made the helmet camera and smartgunner headset. :)

I think the DS-helmets, the welder, the helmet cameras, and the smartgun sights were all done by Terry Reed.

Cheers,
Stefan

Yes Stefan,
DS helmets (and other props) were made by Terry Reed & Otter Effect...

Harry,
keep in mind that part is only about 4cm long...

What makes me wonder is the fact that each "earpiece" consists of lots of individual elements (like the trigon part). Wouldn't it make more sense to make a master of the individual parts and cast them as one? I understand that you have to avoid undercuts and such things, but why would someone cast the trigon part individually? Could that mean that original kit parts were used too?

Giò,
did you get a replacement for the rapier sight that was missing when the auction pictures were taken? Could you mark the cable you are looking for?

Cheers,
Stefan

I checked about...
Seems that all assembled pieces for both sides, are original plastic parts... from model kits or similar...

For example, the piece with the "D7" is in "sand" and/or light military green color plastic ... I can see it clearly because of the missing triangular piece on the right...
I'll post a pic asap!

...The complete green cable... below!

If the parts were all cast, they'd be in resin, right? If original kit parts were incorporated, presumably they would be styrene/plastic?

Perhaps Gio can help clarify this one?

There's some very small and thin parts and a lot of undercuts. For two helmets I would have thought it would have been easier to add at least some of the detail directly from the kits.

Edit: Thanks Gio :)

Yes Simon,
it is a "puzzle" of original styrene/plastic pieces ... surely from “military” model kits (and sci-fi/anime)
(see my note, above, about the "D7" part!)
...nothing appears in resin!

Stefan, about the missing Rapier sight ... I am still looking for it!!!
(you can see the complete helmet below)

Bye

For the "cable" I'd suggest a look at boating/windsurfing supplies - I've seen very similar rope there.

Cheers,
Stefan

I did say 'model motorcycle parts'! They'd possibly be that size if the kit was the right scale wouldn't they?

Jesse is going to do casts of his rapier sight - so this might be an alternative until you get your hand on an original.

As for the Tomahawk parts - these were indeed molded in a brown/green color somewhat lighter than the BB tone of the helmet.

Cheers,
Stefan

I'm pretty sure those are motorcycle parts.
The main engine cover and possibly the ribbed circle, to the side
being the (decorative?) cover plate for it.

The closest I've found are from the
Tamiya 1/6 Harley-Davidson model kits.

Just a couple examples, from real cycles to show the piece in question.
(The model piece is much smaller ;)
