The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I did indeed get to handle Simon's large weapon, yes.
In fact, there were quite a few envious glances as I was swinging it around....

Got the last few parts from Matt, so should finish this a bit more in time for Dcon(?).

In the meantime, made an ally muzzle for a fellow Sger. Made from two diff wall size tube for ease of manufacture just push fitted together.

I'm going to have to settle for a pre-built or resin kit Smartgun as I dont have the time OR money to put my own together.

What makes you think a pre-built one will be cheaper than building one yourself?

Working on my SG costume.

I need to either find or built the harness/arm... and I have to find suitable chest/back armor.

Also need to locate the headset/eyepiece.

Slow progress, but progress nonetheless!

If you're going to go the smartgunner route, you won't be wearing all of the armor, just the greaves.

Right. If screen accuracy is the ideal, then yeah. Though there are references in the Technical Manual that show the smartgunners wearing them. Take that for what it's worth.

I've seen images of SGs wearing greaves, some not.

Im going with the full BDU look (not wearing just a tee under the vest) and with the greaves.

Im also wearing an OD fatigue cap with the headset/eyepiece over it.

Drake and Vasquez declined the use of greaves.
But do they strike you as the type to rigidly follow uniform regs anyway? :D

Makes sense to include them, as several people have already assumed so anyway. I'd personally wear 'em, too.

Greetings from your newest member! :)
I have a question for you, since I am about to take my drill press to my muzzle tube !!
what is the Screen Correct hole pattern for the M56 SmartGun Muzzle Brake ??
My technical manual shows one pattern, my cheapo resin cast part has another pattern,
and my HotToys Vasquez gun ( 1/6th scale ) has yet another pattern !!
Which is correct ???
your pic on page 2 of this thread seems very close to the one in the Tech Manual ??
Is that the Generally Accepted "bible" we aught to use when recreating props ???
Any and all advice will be MOST appreciated !! :)

Heya David!

Best option is to watch the movie several times.
Try frame-advancing the DVD through key moments, whenever there's a close-up of the SG.

You simply CANNOT get more accurate source material than that ;)

In fact, I daresay some kind folks here might even have a few screencaps.....

I had that Idea too, but my TV is a dinosaur ( low resolution, vacuum tube model! )
Maybe I will try using the dvd player on this computer - at least this has a LCD at 1080 P :)

But is it safe to say the Colonial Marines Technical Manual is a legitimate, reliable source for documenting props ????

thanks! ;)

Depends who you ask.
I'm inclined to say no. I regard it as EU - Extended Universe, or rather an expansion on the concepts established by the film. Very cool, not not completely canon.

However, there are several people with decent pics - AliensCollection and Harry Harris, for starters.
I also *believe* Sidewinder's muzzle-brake pictured above (I was going to say 'end-piece', but thought better of it) is pretty darn accurate.

In this case the TM (pg18) is correct, though it lacks detail. My machined replica has the correct hole pattern and diameter reductions. There should be 12 holes in the ring at the rear (this is part of the MG42) and then 3 rings of four holes. The 1st and 3rd set are in line with the centre of the peaks of the crenelations and the 2nd set are in line with the troughs.
Here's a pic of the sentry gun muzzle which is the same as the SG - not the best example cos the middle holes are drilled off-centre!

Thanks Sidewinder - I am glad to know the TM is correct in this case, since I ran out of patience last night & laid out and drilled the pilot holes !!
My M56 uses the Shoei MG42 airsoft as a foundation, so I am just adding on to the Shoei muzzle brake to make it 'correct'.
So at least I have the fancy knurled grooves and rear holes done for me ! :)

btw- what is the approved protocol for posting pictures on this board ? ( so I will do it correctly ! )

cheers! DropShip Dave
