The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

IR sight and Beyerdynamic mic plus ear defender, yeah, an order for both has been placed already, and then the lid will be done as well.

You're welcome. One fine day, I may also go the aluminium route, for now though, plastic more than does the job.
BTW, I too want a smartgun, not only thanks to you, Adam.

Thanks, guys! :delta: Here he is with boots and in his final display space.
No vacuum cleaner this time!

Theoretically, he can also hold the PR in a 2-handed grip, but his damn hand is too tiny to fit around the rifle's grip. Maybe heating up the fingers will do the job.
For now, slung rifle and the MT in hand will have to suffice.
Also, I eventually want to give him long black cloth gloves so he'll be neutral like he already is in the face area (man, that mannequin's face is butt ugly).

Today I am repainting my hand welder that I got thanks to Retrogarde and will add that to the display soon.

Then it's only helmet mic/radio/ear piece plus patches, and some grenades - the single one I got (also from Retrogarde) is with a metal worker as we speak and he's trying to hollow it out so the plunger can be depressed if all works out. 8)

Thanks, man! The BDUs will definitely be weathered in some way or the other.
For the armour, I was going after the Wierzbowski look: not too darkened, not all that scratched and dinged like Hicks and Hudson have later on in the movie.
What I have on it looks way more filthy in person than it does in photos, though.

In light of Nickatron's suggestions, I think I might reconsider after all.
I have slapped together this quick comparison of screen used armour versus my version:

Image

My BDUs need to be faded and worn, no doubt there, but I might also just give the armour another layer of dark grime (grate polish will do the trick) with some more noticeable metal showing through than I have now. I have a tendency of not wanting to overdo weathering, I have seen some trainwrecks in my time where people slap on waaaay to much silver drybrushing on top of EVERYTHING, so I guess I'm from the subtle camp - maybe too subtle in this case, and I want my replica to really give the "screen accurate" vibe.
Higher "contrast" between fabric camo and hard parts' camo will probably be the cherry on top.

Also, here's my hand welder after I overhauled it to fit my colour scheme, thanks again Retrogarde!

The welder looks good.
When you come to the Bochum drop you will hopefully have a chance to compare it
to Nicks point job. Hard to tell from pictures only if you would realy need to darken it that much further.

The trouble is Dennis, different lighting can seriously differ the final outcome.

Here's some pictures of screen used armour. ALL screen used, so hopefully all the same paint job. Different lights... Completely different outcomes.

So what is right?? You decide.

Yeah, it's all lighting and photo surroundings when it comes to comparing prop/costume paintjobs via pics on the interwebs.
So you have a Nickatron camo paintjob on yours then? Real-life comparison would be ace. Bochum is definitely planned, I hope it all works out.

Exactly Rob,
it is so hard/next to impossible to really tell what was only lighting and on-set context and what was the real shade of camo colours used on the physical item, in our perception of how these things are supposed to look we obviously tend to go for what was seen in the final film.
The mistake has been made to darken replica USCM armour to an almost unrecognizable point when the BluRay alone shows that it is not always that dingy and muted as most think it is: compare the guys outside/inside the complex, in the hive (darker, bluer light) and in operations versus them on the ready line and where the face hugger stasis tubes are (brighter, whiter light).

Your pic comparing it to Harry's real Hudson gear is the best lead we've all had so far. One fine day I'd like to snap a pic of my gear next to Harry's Hudson costume...one can dream ;)
Especially the lightest of the greens still has me scratching my head, is it Humbrol 30 or 80?

Still, I reckon mine could just be a smidge darker to closer resemble the Prop Store Apone and then it'll be okay in my book.

Thanks to Rob for showing the effect of lighting.

I can show you pictures of a knife that is either or both metal/silver or black depending on the picture.

>So you have a Nickatron camo paintjob on yours then?
No Thomas has. I only have a light weathered Humbrol color paint job.

> .. darker, bluer light
We can try this at the Fark drop. Just check my Gallery great Con.

Then we have the added problem that Humbrol has been through at least 2 administration changes since the film, and we all know that some of the paint codes/compositions have changed within that time. Most notably the Brown Bess, which changed composition, then went out of production altogether.

Quote:

Having bought practically every green in the Humbrol range, I'm not exactly convinced it's either.
And what's better... even the paint inside the tins doesn't seem to resemble what's on the pot lids either! So it's even more damned hit and miss.

So with that in mind, I think getting something that is absolutely 100% is going to be next to impossible. So we're always going to be relying on what's in the minds eye of the individual.

I'll dig out what I've got in the morning when I can see them all in natural light (my energy saving bulbs make everything look rubbish at night).

Just to show what lighting only can do to the same set of armour in pics, here's my mannequin in
- 1st pic: normal ceiling lamp light, yellow tint, longer exposure
- 2nd pic: same lighting conditions with flash, very short exposure

Image Image

All colours look totally different, and they do look different yet again to the naked eye. It's a bugger when it come to trying matching it to what was seen on screen.
That second pic taken with flash is closer to what my eye sees, and I am baffled how the greens especially seem different, also my "brown bess" substitute (RAL 7013).

It's an absolute doozy ain't it....

You just have to be content that you've done a spanking job as it is, and that you shouldn't try and keep second guessing yourself.
