The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Does anyone have any info on the black (non-jungle) boots Vasquz wears in the film? Or even a decent screen cap? Thanks all!

I believe they were typical all leather army boots of the era-

Image

And I believe the reason she didn't wear jungle boots is that they couldn't easily find her (small) shoe size.

EDIT- did some back tracking and from what has been said in previous threads- they are early Vietnam War ('65?) all leather combat boots.

Some info/pics: http://david.brubakers.us/Vietnam/#COMBATBOOTS

Here I tried to take a couple of pics from the bluray- unfortunately with the high red tone they didn't turn out the greatest:

Willie if you have a bigger version of this pic, the boot is a little clearer:

a while back I had a good look at those pics and did some looking around, with the construction, I think they look like 1980's British army combat boots.

Cool, thanks guys… Yeah, this is the only pic I have - I'll double check though…

Do you know if there's anywhere online that carries 'em?

Thanks again!

Not those you've posted, I'm afraid. Those are 1982 issue BCH. The toes are too long, the eyelets are too many and the edge of the sole has a double lip, as well as being moulded on. I've worn three pairs of these very boots almost every single day from 1992 to yesterday! ;)

Those Vasquez wears are slightly shorter and pointier in the sole, have 7 eyelets, a wider sole extending outside the footprint of the upper and were stitched on. You can see the stitches at the moment where the acid burns her foot:

German Para-Boots were pretty big back then and were pretty plentiful in surplus shops. There was a lightweight version with eyelets instead of speedlace loops, which might be a closer match... Might need some luck finding them, though.

I too am on the search for these.... Not because I am loosing a foot or so on the height and talking in a slightly higher pitch... but I need some for my Officer costume.

Which I am lead to believe used practically the same item.

So what do we know.

Well, we know they're all black leather.
We know there is no toe cap (as you see on say a pair of ammo boots).
We know the side seam was curved, like the Mk1 BCH rather than the later British Assault boots.

That we can say for certain.

We can say they had eyelets for the laces, at least part way up, rather than a 'speedlace' system all the way.

In the picture of them all on the flight deck, it looks like Vas has gaiters or puttees on the tops of her boots.

The early Vietnam boots seem the closest bet, but finding them is like rocking horse poop and finding them cheap is like finding hens teeth in your rocking horse poop.

Mk1 BCH are again, pretty close, but even they're tricky to come by.

Can you find stuff similar... well, yes. There are a few offerings out there by scouring eBay and the surplus shops that can be sourced reasonably priced.

I suppose it's all down to 'how close do you want to go?"

Admittedly, knowing exactly what boots they are would be nice!

Now, maybe it's just my eyes, but those pictures seem to be an entirely different pair of boots to the scene with Warrior in the air-ducts

I seem to be seeing a smooth 'cuff' of leather around the top of the boot, like the French Para Boots (linked below) compared to the 'laced to the top' of the DMS type US Army boots in the other scene.

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Frenc ... B400%3B400

I do recall these were popular with despatch riders in the 1980s and very cheap in surplus stores, along with the aforementioned German boots.

To chime in with Chef: the Vietnam-80s era DMS Leather Combat Boots used by the US Army command a serious premium now and any E-bay auctions will see you in a bidding war with militaria collectors.....Especially in sizes useful adult males, not malnurished pixies or obese yetis. ;)
There were a number of repros and close look alikes- but it's down to you what you want to compromise on: authenticity or price ;)

The irony is the 'smarter' Corcororan boots in black with the 'brogue style' toecap are easier to get hold of as they were 'the' boots to go with dress uniforms- the DMS versions ended up being sold of cheap as surplus and used to death, hence being more scarce now.

OH, FOR #?£%'s SAKE......!!!

Sorry, being an idiot - They are CLEARLY French Army Ranger style boots!!!!!
More of an idiot, as I also own two pairs myself, albeit in tan rather than black.

Originals (1950s onward), or more likely the cheaper knock-off versions done in black:
https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1713649 ... boots-bmja

You can see the cuff and lower buckle in the last pic of Kevin's post, blatant as a brick through a window!
These are based on US Army M43 boots and fashion companies have been copying the styles since the late 50s, so could be original army issue or high-street fashion/workman issue.

Bad news is that older ones will likely be quite dry and require reconditioning.
Worse news is that even the newer ones will require a fair bit of breaking in - These are old boots that really are 'tough as old boots'!

Good news is that black ones ('original knock-off' or modern knock-off) are quite plentiful at the moment.

Edit: Crossposted with Demoncase above!

From that promo pic it looks like it, but I don't know about all that for actual filming. Those are really high and really elaborate up top.

She had her knife tied off in that area where the extra buckles would be so it would def have been visible. Unless she has the pants over the buckles here.

Not to mention, as already stated, it is hard to imagine they would have such drastically different boot for Gale to wear.

It is highly likely that Gale and Jenette have different shoe sizes, since Jenette is actually quite petite.

Not that this image 'proves' anything, but just another shot from the promo shoot. Doesnt seem to have the special cuff, but I guess the pants could just be hanging over the 'extra buckles'

That last pic in the wreckage sure looks like a buckle poking out...hmm. I am officially dropping out of the anti-french-boot side (not that there seemed to be one).

Heheheh, it's quality.

What you have to remember is it's a film set... The crews back then probably didn't think too hard about continuity (especially considering sets of armour for individual actors differed in their camo patterns!). They probably just grabbed what they could from the surplus store.

You know how it goes...

Costume Gopher walks into surplus store with his list...
"Hey... I need 10 pairs of Jungle Boots..."
"oh, you don't do them in a size 5... What else you got in a size 5 that's cheap??"

They probably rummaged around in the 'bargain bin' like we used to do as kids!

Rangers are designed to be resoled and surplus pairs often have been, with different treads.
Trouble is there have been so many variants, both within and outside French forces, that I don't think we could peg them down exactly without seeing inside the SU costume.
