The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

We had some friends over yesterday to celebrate another friends birthday. Although it was not my birthday I too received a gift which nearly knocked me of my feet, so I though I should share it with you guys because it has been mentioned here.

The sorry thing is,it has no brand markings on it,so allthough i have it i still can't identify it.

That's the sorry thing about it, there are no trade markings on it, so I can't identify it.

Is that what Carter Burke places his business card next to in Ripley's apartment? I never realized that was a lighter!

I've had a bit of a search around for this but with no luck. Google image search, because it doesn't know what size it is, thinks it's either a telescope or a rifle! My thinking is that it's either a really rare, expensive lighter - or a very cheap one that wasn't available much back in the day. At this stage who knows!

I have it,i just wish i had more answers for you all.

I think harry ist probably right though with his asumption either it was an expensive piece back in the day or some cheap £3 lighter, all i can say is that the base Material is messing, and then painted, all i can say ist that i wasn't expecting this, but i'm so Gratefull to have such good friends.

I had the chance seeing the lighter live last weekend. 8)
Awseome prop. Fully agree with Harry and Neil.
I still hope we find better BTS or screenshots and perhaps a shop to order them still today.

could it be the internals of a table top lighter? Ive seen similar things inside of a housing or on a base stand. just my 2 cents.

I'm sure it's just a lighter

Here's a very similar Japanese "MR. SMOKE" lighter

Hi Guys,

My and another member (philphy) have been searching for this lighter for a while now.
We found this the Bronica Boxer. Same make as Hicks lighter.

There are differences, but it make you wonder if Bronica did make any version.

If the lighter were made by Bronica, I think it would be branded accordingly (unless it's not the complete lighter we have here).

Cheers

Yes it's the same one Ripley used; obviously not from the film but nevertheless exactly the same.

Holy sh*t! That Boxer is gorgeous!
Just had a wee hunt for one (just curious on prices), and I'm very very glad I'm not into collecting lighters, I could become a lot poorer if I developed that particular habit :D

P.s. thinking this thread should be split if an Admin can do so (or the title renamed to include the lighter stuff). Would make it easier to find these thread/s in the years to come.

Done!

If that used to have a case/cover, it would make a lot of sense. A theoretical missing housing almost certainly would have had the brand markings on it. Taking something "normal" and removing part of it to appear far more interesting and unique for film would be a classic move. Those other 'similar' examples def imply it could very well have been a stand-alone though... hmmm.

Hey Schotti, would the person who gave you the gift have any extra info? How did they find it and know to give this amazing gift?

We visited him a few weeks ago and I saw the lighter in a glass cabinet,so obviously I asked where he got it from. He replied that he bought it many years ago at a car boot sale along with some others that where in a box.

I told him that a lot of people are looking for this lighter because it was in a small scene in a movie.

I never asked him if he would part with it.

When he gave me it I just said I couldn't take it as a gift. He just said it has no worth to him and as I am a smoker it would be appropriate.

I’ve tried to post an image of the lighter on an eBay group I’m part of to try to identify it but still waiting for it to be authorised by the admins...

To me the lighter doesn't look stylish enough for an normal lighter. No branding, brass base material painted black with chormed end caps - that looks more of
a) it's only the interal parts of the actual lighter
b) something that was sold with a blowtorch, welding equipment or lab equipment (e.g. is robust and does the job but nothing more).

Cheers
Stefan
