I was looking for references for my final Pulse Rifle build, and when frame advancing I discovered a couple interesting things...

1) There appears to either be a plate or a piece of padding attached to the rear of the hero rifle stock.



2) They use no fewer than 3 different rifles in the "Ripley rescues Newt" sequence. I knew about the first and last versions, but never noticed the "Hero-Stunt" version pictured below.

The Full, practical hero rifle with live M870 and M1A1.



What I call a "Hero-Stunt Rifle" which appears to have a live Thompson, 8 hole barrel vent and dummy 870 inside a steel Spas Cage. This version of the grenade launcher is what is used in the "Ripley goes ballistic" sequence in the Alien Queen's chamber in the hive.









And finally, a full lightweight stunt rifle with dummy Thomson and Grenade Launcher.





Kind of interesting what you can still learn after watching a movie for 22 years.

Very interesting.

The thing I noticed in this pic:


Is the very wide width of the shroud under the counter/at the rear of the GL.

Also, the front of the shroud below the trigger guard seems to be a curved piece, rather than the flat-fronted section we usually know about.

In fact the original PRs are quite a bit wider at that point than most, if not all of the replicas out there. Consequently the magazine base is quite a bit wider too.

I know what you mean about learning new stuff Russ, and that's part of what keeps this hobby fresh for me. It wasn't that long ago that someone (I think it was Mike Rush) pointed out to me that Drake kisses his Smart Gun just before he leaves the ready room, there's even a sound effect!

I'm not sure if that's padding on the end of the stock there, or just a result of worn paint and the right reflection. Weird though!

One thing I'll add is that of all the original Pulse Rifles I've seen over the years, no two are exactly the same. In the same way that the USCM armour sets for each character have differences in their build and paint-job, the PRs differ in many subtle ways. Of course it didn't matter at the time because we could barely pause videotape cleanly, but now in the age of the pin-sharp freeze-frame these differences come to light more & more.

I've always had a pad on mine:

The design works perfect with the "hot dog" holes of the SPAS cage
and stock. And that's my blood on it...


All stocks that are out there forget the center piece:


I modded my SD studio stock.

Nice one Matt, that pad looks just right. Might have to do something similar.

Digging the stains too. Nothing says "this project was a pig" like a bit'o blood.

Last week I was watching Aliens (pretty good flick if you haven't seen it, check it out!) and I noticed that the bottom plate of the magazine was twice as wide as mine, and I seriously started thinking about widening my shrouds. But in all honesty, I like mine the way they are, and I think it would look odd if it was that thick.

Kind of the way I've gotten used to the way the Armor FX Stormtroopers look, and when I see a screen accurate Stormtrooper, it looks wrong.

Does that make any sense?

Matsuo and I were just talking about the large size difference between the mag wells on all the fan made rifles and the screen used ones. Pretty big difference!

But really, aside from perhaps making the shot counter area stronger, I don't see what benefit you'd really gain from enlarging the size aside from being more "screen accurate."

While SA is for some of us an ideal, it's the sad fact of things that many of the props and costumes we make as fans are often times better quality than what was actually built for the films.

Know exactly what you mean I trooped in my FX for 3 years, just switched to TM and it doesn't feel right too me. (Though I ditched the awful FX bucket after my first troop).

AS far as I know the one used here is the 10 holer. The second pic below (not in this reply) is the 8 holer. Only the "10 holer" had a working grenade launcher. All the 8 holers had GL dummies with loose pump hand guard (you can see how they move around freely several times in the OP firefight). Ripley never fires the Grenade launcher on screen as there is a frame cut to a muzzle. Vasques is the only one seen actually firing the grenade launcher.

Interesting enough the original 8 holer from Aliens in Alien 3 has a fully working GL. But as we know it it must have been put in to later as the 10 holer was probably scrapped when returning the guns after the production.

Ripley does fire the shotgun, but not after she racks the pump grip. There's a close up of the grip being pumped (complete with sound FX), then a cut to a medium shot of Ripley firing the shotgun itself. This happens 2-3 times. Close up, Medium shot.

Also found another "That's interesting" moment.

As the crew is ready for the drop, we're treated to an over the shoulder shot outside the cockpit of the dropship. As the hanger bay doors open, you can see the top edge of the right side cockpit window Isn't sealed and looks to have 1/4 inch gap. That whistling you hear wasn't Spunkmeyer.

For the but pad I have used an old belt, or left over thick rubber that I use to support/attach the knees to the shin armor.

Not ever fired blank shottie shells, but I imagine they still have a painful kick...

I'd guess they weren't full charge blanks - no need for them to be.

I dont think blank firing rounds have any kick at all. I have fired a three inch magnum 12 guage one handed from a stock 870 and it wasnt too bad, albiet steel shot which is lighter than lead, but in any regard the heavy pulse rifle would absorb most of this recoil.
