The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Seems it was launched as a bug-riddled mess.

But, unlike with A:CM, reviewers are waiting a few weeks (it's already been released) before reviewing it, so it can be patched first:

Gearbox must think they were victimised.

Edit: Several patches later and it's a lot better bug wise.

Fuck sake, that seems a bit unfair! NOT reviewing until patched because....why? Why not give other games the same chance? OR be fair and re-eview A:CM now?

I pointed that out on another forum and got shot down, with the reason given that it's an MMO, so it's allowed some leeway.

As it's been patched a bit now and a friend has recommended it, I've bought it. :)

Is it any good Steve?

I like the game / TV tie-in was thinking about getting it.

Opinions are personal, so if I say I like it, don't trust what I say as absolute truth.

There's no manual (apart from basic controls layout on the Xbox version) and the starting tutorial barely scratches the surface of the game, leaving buying/selling/modding items untouched, so you'll need to read a lot of guides to the game, on such sites as IGN, etc.

PC version has a lot more control options, especially for groups/clans.

I'm having fun at the start, just playing it like single player, with the odd mission amongst other players/groups/clans doing the same mission.

e.g. Tonight I was having difficulty taking out a camp area, especially the boss mini-gunner.
After a few deaths (respawning costs some game cash called scrips each time) I was gradually reducing the numbers in the camp, when two vehicles flew into the camp, about six players jumped out and wasted all the enemies in a few seconds, then got back into their cars and drove off, leaving me to flick the switch on the radio tower in the camp to complete the mission. :D

Even though I'm not in a clan yet, I've been revived by other players, so there's definitely a good vibe to the game. :)

Note: Although there's no monthly subscription, you can spend real money (MS points on Xbox) to get extra in-game scrips, etc., but there's no real need to do that, as you earn enough doing side missions, looting bodies, etc.

Just finished what this game classes as an Instance; a Major Arkfall, comprising of several Minor Arkfalls, which are multiple enemy battles, then ending in a boss battle.

You have a few smaller battles in an area, then when they're all cleared, end up at the boss.

Here's a vid of the final boss battle for the Arkfall I did today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqnrgs04nRM
The boss fight starts at 2:00 minutes in.

Or a vid off the whole thing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMPZbD7ghPU

Very hard, but good fun, with some decent loot too. :D

Looks a tad 'chaotic'

But a whole lot of fun

How do they go about distributing the loot? What would stop a player just sitting on the edge of the mass combat and claiming a share?

You each get your own loot drops, so there's no taking someone else's spoils. :)

I think ammo drops are for everyone, so they stay for multiple collections too. :)

I did that Arkfall with 19 other players. You get a scoreboard at the end for kills, revives of other players, etc. and I came 12th. :)

Best tip before starting to play the game:

Quote:
While all of this is unfolding, open up your web browser and head to the official Defiance website (or follow this link) to create your Ark Hunter account. Follow the steps there and, once you’re all confirmed, your email is validated, and everything else, click the “My Ego” link in the menu bar at the top of the page.

Now this next part is entirely optional, but a wise move if you’d like to give yourself an early boost in the game. Search the Internet for a list “Arkfall codes.” The folks at Orcz.com have assembled a great one. Scroll down on that page until you get to the long, looooong list of codes.
Now comes the fun part.

What you want to do is enter 120 of those codes in on the My Ego website using the big text box in the center of the page. No lies: it’s going to take you some time. That’s why we got the whole game installation process started first. You are hopefully adept enough with copy/pasting and alt-tabbing between browser windows to do this efficiently. It goes quickly once you get into a rhythm. Entering all of those codes unlocks a healthy assortment of content, some of which must be redeemed from the in-game store after you start playing. The Orcz.com page breaks down what the rewards are for each code milestone, and the My Ego page also updates with each reward once you unlock it.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/you ... pocalypse/

Get codes here:
http://www.xbox360achievements.org/foru ... p?t=419766
Note: More than 120 codes listed/found, but you can only enter 120 of them. Any 120 will do.
Also, if you start getting error messages when entering codes, try closing the browser and logging back in.
